Who says you learn nothing from being a couch potato? In fact, I think I’ve learned a great deal about the real world from watching back to back episodes of Suits, Fairly Legal and Law & Order: SVU (all of which you can catch on DIVA Universal, channel 702).
I bet you’re not buying this sad excuse to watch more TV at home, but here’s vital proof of some very good career tips you could use, all taken from workaholics of DIVA Universal.
Don’t get romantically involved with people you work with
Don Draper (Mad Men) married his assistant, but we all know how that ended. Rachel and Mike (Suits) were on and off like a ruined electrical plug, not to mention the tension. The senior partners began questioning Alicia Florrick and Will Gardner’s relationship.
Logically, when things are all hot and heavy, sure going to the office may seem like an exciting activity to look forward to. But what happens when things go wrong? Can you separate work and love matters then or are you the kind who will throw a flower vase at your ex in a meeting room?
Always make time for family
Think Up All Night. No matter how crazy busy Reagan is with The Ava Show, she never scrimps on time with her baby Amy and her husband Chris. Things might get hectic at the office, but once you reach home, try not to bring work back with you and spend more time with the family. Your career pays your bills but your family is your support team.
Carry ballet flats to work
When you watch TV dramas, it looks so chic to be like Kate Reed in Fairly Legal (well, don’t all lawyers walk around in heels?), sauntering in the office in that 5 inch Christian Louboutin heels. However those heels are killer to walk in from 9-5. Always keep your ballet flats handy so you won’t suffer by midday.
Don’t out-dress your boss
Remember the episode in Suits where Mike joined Pearson Hardman and Harvey made him buy a new suit? If you’re in the corporate scene, you can never out dress or look scruffy next to the old man. But when you work in a more creative field, don’t go looking like you came out of the pages of Vogue Magazine when the old man is in sneakers and hipster gear.
The key is to emulate your boss’ sense of style, as studies show that those who dressed similar to their bosses tend to be favoured for promotions. If your lady boss wears knee length skirts, don’t go and wear skirts that make Paris Hilton look like a nun in comparison.
And if your male boss wears jeans to work, don’t come in a three piece suit. With that in mind, I might have to start dressing like a middle aged man. Do you have any career tips of your own? Don’t forget sharing is caring! XX
