PETALING JAYA: Fans of American heavy metal band `Lamb of God' have taken to social media to cry foul over the Department of Islamic Development (Jakim)'s call to ban its upcoming concert, calling the move "hypocritical".
Fans of metal music, commonly referred to as 'metalheads', expressed disdain that the authorities could not be bothered to educate themselves on the genre's many complexities.
Jakim had accused the band of bringing about a new wave of the "black metal scare" and that the band was "satanic". "First of all, Lamb of God is not even black metal.
People who understand metal music know the vast difference between black metal and the other genres," said human rights lawyer Michelle Yesudas when contacted. Lamb of God, slated to perform at Rockaway Festival on September 28, is commonly labeled as groove metal, heavy metal, or metalcore
. Rockaway Festival is major annual gathering of international and local rock and metal acts that attract fans from all over the region.
"I bet if you peel all off of these religious reasons, you'll discover that this is all about self-preservation. If it really is for religion, those heavily drugged clubbers at rave parties would have gotten it by now," Muhammad Asri Ashari, a metal musician, wrote on Facebook. Another avid metalhead, Mikhail Svrcula, also took to Facebook to point out that Jakim was pigeonholing every metal act based on a few bad apples. "Sure, they have tattoos, but all of them are family men with children.
They are like any other family man, a far cry from who Jakim thinks are in these bands," he said. "This is art. This is how people express their feelings.
Some people perform and go to metal concerts. That does not mean we are insulting any religion." Many other fans criticised Jakim of double standards. Adan Rahman @Adey_Adan1h tweeted: "Lamb of God to be banned from performing.
Meanwhile, alcohol, gambling and clubs are widespread. Congratulations, Malaysia." Other fans also questioned why acts such as Jennifer Lopez or K-Pop acts, known for provocative onstage routines, were allowed to perform, with many concluding that it is discrimination against metal music.
Even a politician has defended the concert. Kedah Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang tweeted: "After New Village and Tanda Putera, now comes Lamb of God. I think Malaysians are mature enough to judge things on their own. If (you) don't like (it), then don't watch (it). No one (is) forcing anyone to buy (a) ticket and watch."

KEY WEST: American 64-year-old long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad on Monday became the first person to swim across the Florida Straits from Cuba without a shark cage, succeeding on her fifth attempt at the feat.
Her face sunburned and lips swollen, with barely enough energy to speak, Nyad waded ashore at Key West after a 53-hour swim and delivered a simple message to onlookers:
"We should never, ever give up .... You never are too old to chase your dreams." In an inspiration to Baby Boomers everywhere, Nyad completed the estimated 110-mile (177-km) journey after departing from Havana on Saturday morning.
She set a record for the longest ocean swim without a shark cage or flippers, according to her crew. She was met by crowds in Key West who surrounded her, snapping photos, as they enjoyed sunny beach weather on the annual Labor Day holiday.
Helpers were waiting to give her medical treatment and immediately placed her on a stretcher and hydrated her with an IV before she was taken to a hospital.
The iron-willed Nyad had been trying to achieve the crossing for 35 years, describing it on her website as her "Xtreme Dream," and seemed determined to prove The Beatles were right that there is plenty to live for "when I'm 64." "Diana shows that at any age you can do whatever you want," said Nancy Jordan, 57, a volunteer pilot on one of Nyad's support vessels.
"That's what she set out to show; don't ever give up your dream." Dave Magmone, whose boat was used to prepare Nyad's meals, said,
"She has a mental and physical strength like no one I have ever known. She is an example for all people, regardless of their age."
Women and men of a certain age have been inspired in recent years by a wave of older athletes breaking records and snagging headlines
. Last year, then Colorado Rockies player Jamie Moyer, now 50, became the oldest pitcher in Major League Baseball history to win a game.
Canadian Ed Whitlock, now 82, shattered records when he ran the 2012 Toronto Marathon in 3 hours 30 minutes. And Dana Torres in 2008 at age 41 became the oldest-ever American female swimmer to win an Olympic medal.
"I think this is the prime. When one reaches this age, you still have a body that's strong but now you have a better mind," Nyad told CNN before a previous failed attempt to making the crossing in 2011.
JELLYFISH, SHARKS Nyad's team said her fifth attempt at the Florida crossing benefited from several key factors, including calm seas, the surprising lack of jellyfish and favorable currents in the powerful Gulf Stream that flows eastwards through the Florida Straits.
"You can't do the swim unless you have three things - the determination, the weather and the cooperation of the Gulf Stream," said Ron Bartlett, her navigator
. Bartlett said the crew only encountered one minor squall during the crossing and only one deadly box jellyfish sighting.
The marathon swimmer had said this was her final attempt, this time equipped with a protective silicone mask as well as a body suit to better protect her from box jellyfish that forced her to end one of two attempted crossings last year.
A team of ocean kayakers and divers accompanied Nyad on her journey dragging an electronic device in the water that emitted a current to repel sharks.
Nyad has spent much of her life in the water. She described in a 2011 YouTube documentary how her father told her when she was a young girl she was destined to swim, noting that her last name is derived from the Greek word for water nymphs or female swimmers.
Born in New York, the multi-lingual Nyad was raised in south Florida by a French mother and Greek-Egyptian stepfather and swam six hours a day as a 12-year-old
. She retired after successfully completing a swim from Bimini in the Bahamas to Florida in 1979, ending a long-distance career that set several world records including one for circling Manhattan in less than eight hours in 1975.
She went on to a career in sports journalism and fitness and has expressed a lifelong fascination with Cuba. The treacherous Florida Straits has been conquered only twice previously, both times with the aid of a protective cage.
The last time was by Australian Susie Maroney, who used a protective cage at age 22 during a 1997 swim. The cage glided on ocean currents and enabled Maroney to make the journey in just 25 hours.
Nyad's fifth attempt to make the crossing comes 35 years after she made her first go at it aged 28 in 1978, when she gave up after covering 76 miles in 42 hours, with the aid that time of a shark cage.
With Key West in her sights on Monday Nyad halted briefly about 2 miles offshore to thank her support team.
"This is a lifelong dream of mine and I'm very, very glad to be with you," she said, according to her website. "So let's get going so we can have a whopping party."

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will be hosting the Mrs Universe 2014 pageant with participants from Muslim countries next year in the wake of a fatwa prohibiting Malaysian Muslims from participating in such contests. A spokesman for KL Sogo said the company would be the primary sponsor for the event here.
"KL Sogo will be the primary sponsor for the international pageant if it is held here next year as announced in Aruba, Venezuela, last month after this year's contest,' she told theSun.
This year's competition last month saw Pakistan and Bangladesh, both Muslim nations, taking part in the contest.
Reigning Mrs Malaysia Universe Carol Lee (pic), who was crowned Mrs Universe 2013 on Aug 11, making her the first Asian to win the international beauty queen title, said the announcement about Malaysia being the host next year was made after the contest.
"I confirm that the 2014 Mrs Universe finals will be held in Malaysia. As for the date, venue, organizers or sponsors, they have not been finalized yet," said Lee.
The 39-year-old news presenter, who is the ambassador for KL Sogo, was proud that Malaysia had been chosen to host the major global event.
The fatwa prohibiting Muslim women from joining beauty pageants was issued and gazetted under the Federal Territories Islamic Administration Act in February 1996.
The Fatwa Council came down hard recently on four Muslim finalists of the Miss Malaysia World 2013 pageant, forcing them to drop out of the contest.
The council had reportedly said beauty pageants are "haram" or not permissible under the Administration of Islamic Laws Act of 1996, and the participation of Muslim women in the contest would "insult Islam". Former beauty queen and Miss Malaysia World official pageant organizer Datuk Anna Lim did not feel that Malaysia hosting the Mrs Universe 2014 here would be a problem despite the participation of foreign Muslim contestants.
"They do not want Muslim women to participate; It is not my call to say whether the Muslim women should participate or not."
The Mrs Universe pageant is touted as recognition of the "most honorable married woman" and is awarded to women aged between 25 and 45, taking into account family and career as well as involvement in a significant cause.
Lee, a mother of a nine-year-old daughter, garnered almost 100,000 public votes online, beating beauty queens from 31 other countries at the pageant, themed "Stop Domestic Violence".

Album kompilasi tersebut memuatkan sebanyak 17 buah lagu iaitu tiga lagu baru, Hijaukan Bumi, I Love You, dan Kecuali Kami. Serta dua trek bonus adalah Jetlag nyanyian bersama kumpulan punk rock Kanada iaitu Simple Plan dan Aku Yang Tersakiti nyanyian bersama Judika. Album edaran Warner Music (M) Sdn Bhd ini berharga RM 27.90.

 Tanti, Chua Sorok Kisah Cinta
.

Album kompilasi tersebut memuatkan sebanyak 17 buah lagu iaitu tiga lagu baru, Hijaukan Bumi, I Love You, dan Kecuali Kami. Serta dua trek bonus adalah Jetlag nyanyian bersama kumpulan punk rock Kanada iaitu Simple Plan dan Aku Yang Tersakiti nyanyian bersama Judika. Album edaran Warner Music (M) Sdn Bhd ini berharga RM 27.90.

 Tanti, Chua Sorok Kisah Cinta
.

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's move in requesting a meet-up with the government to solve national issues has raised several questions.
Some viewed it as an appropriate move, however there are also those who have taken to questioning his motives.
Many are hoping that the meet-up, should it materializes, would be able to find solutions to many problems currently plaguing the country, namely serious crimes, national unity, economy, government policies and others.
However, there are certain quarters who remained doubtful and believed this was mere political gimmick, during his speech in conjunction with the nation's 56th Merdeka celebration last week.
Political analysts contacted by Malaysian Digest were doubtful, asking for explanations as to why the offer was only made three months after the 13th general election (GE13) and after the courts had rejected all of Pakatan Rakyat's (PR) election petitions.
Associate Professor Dr Ismail Sualman from University Teknologi Mara said that unity talks, put forward by Anwar was subjective and depended on Anwar's intention.
"If his intention is unity, then the call is welcome, but if it is the opposite, then this is probably another one of the Opposition's political agenda.
"His actions can be interpreted as desperate especially since they raised many doubts post GE13 and were unable to accept defeat," he said.
"This is what we call a political cliche. After they took to the streets with protests and such, now Anwar wants to cooperate with the government?" Dr Ismail asked.
He added that the political sentiment fanned by Anwar during GE13 left a deep impact specifically to the Malays who were hurt by his actions that resembled a man obsessed over the position of a Prime Minister. "We need to know why he is suddenly interested to cooperate with Barisan Nasional (BN). We want to know why because we want to avoid any doubts in the future.
"However this all depends on BN leaders. If this meet-up is beneficial, then it will be much welcomed," he added. Meanwhile, Dr Ismail said a body or individual should be appointed to act as a mediator between the Government and the Opposition in order to ensure everything runs smoothly.
"If Anwar is sincere, I propose a qualified individual with high credibility in terms of national unity," he said when contacted by mD yesterday.
Dr Ismail added that he also agreed with Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim's suggestion that Anwar should bring the matter to Parliament.
Political analyst, Dr Sivamurugan Pandian from Universiti Sains Malaysia urged Anwar to laid out his cards regarding the meet-up to avoid confusion amongst the rakyat.
"His motives in calling for a dialogue has to be clarified in order to avoid negative reactions from the public," he told mD.
He added that the purpose and desired end result from the meeting should be disclosed for the people to see.
"If he is confident with this move, he has to come clean why only now, three months after GE13. "I agree with Shahidan that Anwar should be given room to speak in Parliament," he said.
Dr Sivamurugan added that should Anwar be given a chance to speak in Parliament, as it would be easier to acquire the yays or nays from other Parliament members.
Meanwhile, PAS yesterday questioned Anwar's move as the same suggestion made by its president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang four years ago was met with heavy criticism.
Within BN, many shared Shahidan's opinion, that Anwar should be given room to discuss national matters in Parliament.
Amongst those are Umno Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and Tourism and Culture minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz. Anwar in his speech last week reportedly said a mutual meeting point between BN and PR must be achieved soon in order to save the country.
He also urged for all parties to forget their past mistakes in light of Merdeka celebrations. He said that Pakatan was prepared to forget about the 'tension and corruption committed by the Election Commission (EC) during GE13'.
Amongst the issue he wishes to discuss are race and religion matters, economy, crime, government policies and administration in terms of combatting corruption and the fairness in awarding tenders.
