Lisa MacMullin shows her favorite picture of David and her, taken on Oct.15, 2011.
( AKIRA SUWA / Staff Photographer )

A portrait of Lisa MacMullin in her home. She and her husband, Brian, have struggled with her son, David´s drug addiction for five years.
MANTUA TWP. Lisa MacMullin found her son in the fetal position and wheezing on her bathroom floor, heroin in his veins, his eyes shut, lips purple, skin gray. It was the 21-year-old's third overdose at home in about a year.
Each time, she rushed to his side, frantic. This time, his father dragged the wiry, 5-foot-11 young man out of the cramped bathroom to administer CPR. MacMullin was on the phone with 911, sobbing. Surely he was dying, she feared. But he survived, and she kicked him out of the house.
She had had enough of his drug addiction. Inside she was uneasy, but it was time for tough love. He would have to get his life together before he could return. David A. Zane Jr. would spend the next few years living with friends or his girlfriend (they would have a daughter together, now 2), or in the streets.
So on Sept. 6, four years after she had thrown him out of her Mantua Township house - relenting only briefly late last year - MacMullin, 45, refused to be at her son's side again. This time he was facing a Superior Court judge in Gloucester County to be sentenced for burglary and theft. In a riveting scene, an assistant prosecutor read to the court a statement e-mailed by one of Zane's three burglary victims - his mother.
MacMullin addressed the letter directly to her wayward son, now 25. The day he was being sentenced, she noted, was important to the family for another reason: They were driving his 18-year-old sister, Morgan, to college in Providence, R.I. "Instead of allowing today to be about you, David, today is about your sister," MacMullin wrote.
"You will never know the heartache that you have caused me, and I'm not so sure that you care. I have forgiven you for what you took from me, David. This was never about that. Your drug problems have turned you into a person I no longer recognize.
"I hope whatever jail time you receive, David, you take to reflect on the many things you have done wrong and getting serious help for your drug addiction." Shackled, he said in court he wished his mother were there, according to Bryant Flowers, the prosecutor who read the e-mail.
The letter offered a poignant, public glimpse of how a son's eight-year drug habit fractured a family and alienated a mother, who resolved to focus on her other child. She hoped her firmness would force her older child to get his life together.
Her son's life seemed to unravel, MacMullin recalled last week, after he caused the death of his best friend, a fellow Clearview Regional High School student, in 2005 in a drunken-driving crash. "I know he's never forgiven himself."
She tapped out the letter on her iPhone the night before the sentencing. She found an assistant county prosecutor's e-mail address online and sent her letter about 10:30 p.m. That prosecutor, Mary Pyffer, passed it to Flowers.
This victim-impact statement - firm, but also bravely compassionate - was unusual, according to Gloucester County prosecutors. "She gave a very powerful statement, which I believe not only voiced her personal dilemma with her son,"
County Prosecutor Sean F. Dalton said. "But it was also a story that I'm sure a lot of families can relate to in dealing with the struggle of addiction." At Clearview, David was a class clown. Once he disrupted Spanish class by tapping his desk with two pencils, like a drum set.
In September 2005, then 17, he drove off the road, careered down an embankment, and crashed into a utility pole on the way home from a party at Rowan University. Michael Mariano, 16, was ejected and died at the scene. Zane's blood-alcohol content was over the legal limit, MacMullin said.
He performed CPR on Mariano and stayed with him until police arrived. At the hospital, he learned his friend had died. "I looked into his eyes and I saw this sadness. I knew . . . that he was never going to be the same," his mother said. Zane, convicted of vehicular homicide, served a year between prison and a halfway house.
Then he started using marijuana. Then heroin. In one incident, a Camden officer offered David leniency. He did not arrest him and a friend when the two tried to buy drugs. "I gave him a choice: Either you give me your parents' number or I will throw your a- in jail," MacMullin said the officer told her on the phone.
The family tried its own discipline, confining him to the house, not allowing him to have friends visit. In one of the overdoses, MacMullin heard a thud in the bathroom, and the wheezing that still haunts her. MacMullin said she gave him CPR.
Morgan, then 14, stood in the doorway staring at her brother. "I will never forget the look on her face," MacMullin said. David never finished any of the rehabilitation programs to which his family sent him. Once he abruptly left a Florida rehabilitation facility and asked his mother for plane fare. She refused. A girlfriend gave him bus money.
Banishing David "was sad, but it was necessary. He was still doing drugs, and it was for the safety of Morgan" MacMullin said. Still, the mother-son bond was not severed. He sent her text messages nights saying he loved her, and he visited for family gatherings. She spent uneasy nights.
From her front porch, she watched for flashing lights, expecting a uniformed messenger to tell her that her son had died of an overdose. "It has always been a struggle with me, making those really tough decisions," she said.
"Being his mother, I always harbored a lot of guilt. I kind of always felt like what kind of mother am I that my son, his life, has turned out this way." Her father, Joe McCart, a semiretired computer-parts salesman, guided by his Catholic faith, tells her to keep praying.
"I do know that we all have to find forgiveness in our hearts, because there will be a time when he is sincerely going to try to get better and we have to be there to help him," McCart said. The family relented and let David move back into the house last November.
Then in February, he cracked his mother's safe and stole her wedding ring. The diamond in the ring had been passed down from MacMullin's grandmother, who died in 1976. "I know somewhere, deep inside, that wonderful little boy that I raised still exists," she said.
Morgan is studying to be a pastry chef at Johnson & Wales University, in Providence. She is taking English, math, biology, and public speaking this freshman semester. A former Clearview classmate, who enrolled early, showed her how to press her uniform. Her brother is serving a year in prison.

In this image provided by NOAA taken Sunday Sept. 15, 2013 at 2:45 a.m. EDT shows hurricane Ingrid in the Gulf of Mexico approaching the coast of Mexico and tropical storm Manuel just off the western coast of Mexico. Hurricane Ingrid was packing maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph) early Sunday. The storm was centered about 175 miles (280 km) east of Tampico, Mexico and moving north-northwest at 7 mph (11 km). Off Mexico´s Pacific coast, Tropical Storm Manuel was getting stronger, moving with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kph) and expected to be nearing the southwestern coast of Mexico by Sunday morning, possibly as a hurricane. MEXICO CITY: Tropical storm Ingrid strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane off Mexico's Gulf Coast on Saturday, becoming the second hurricane of the Atlantic season as it dumped heavy rain across eastern Mexico. Rain from the storm has caused river levels to rise and emergency services to prepare for evacuations, but state oil monopoly Pemex said its installations in the Gulf of Mexico were operating normally. Ingrid, with winds of 75 miles per hour, could grow even stronger over the next two days as it nears Mexico's coast, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. The storm was 195 miles east of the port of Tuxpan in Veracruz state at 6 p.m. ET and moving north at about 7 miles per hour, the NHC said. Pemex was operating under security protocols but none of its installations had been affected, a spokesman said earlier on Saturday. Two of Mexico's three major oil-exporting ports were closed, but most of the country's Gulf Coast ports including Veracruz remained open on Saturday as the storm approached. Emergency services in Veracruz state were preparing shelters in the event of flooding, but at midday the shelters were empty, a spokesman said. A hurricane watch was in effect for a stretch of Veracruz's northern coastline, the NHC said. Landfall was expected on Monday morning for Ingrid, the ninth storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. The storm was expected to dump between 10 inches and 25 inches of rain over a large part of eastern Mexico, which could cause rivers to swell, provoking flash floods and mudslides, according to the Miami-based NHC. Ingrid could also bring a storm surge that would raise waters by two to four feet above normal tide levels near where the storm makes landfall, the NHC said. Separately, tropical storm warnings are in effect on the Pacific Coast of Mexico from Acapulco to Manzanillo, where Tropical Storm Manuel is churning about 85 miles offshore. Manuel was dumping heavy rain and causing landslides in parts of Oaxaca and Guerrero states in western Mexico.

Mount Sinabung spews hot gas and ash during an eruption as seen from Gundaling village, Indonesia,

JAKARTA: Thousands of villagers fled Sunday after a volcano erupted on Indonesia's Sumatra island spewing rocks and red-hot ash onto surrounding villages, officials said.
Mount Sinabung in Karo district, North Sumatra province, erupted violently before dawn. "More than 3,000 people have been evacuated from areas within a three-kilometre (two-mile) radius of the volcano, and they are all safe,"
Asren Nasution, the head of North Sumatra disaster agency, told AFP. Five halls normally used for traditional cultural ceremonies had been converted into shelters for those displaced.
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, national disaster agency spokesman, said 3,710 people had so far been evacuated.
Nugroho said it was second recent eruption of Sinabung. The volcano was dormant for nearly 100 years before erupting in August and September 2010, forcing about 12,000 people to flee.
Indonesia has dozens of active volcanoes and straddles major tectonic fault lines known as the "Ring of Fire" between the Pacific and Indian oceans. Last month five people were killed and hundreds evacuated when a volcano on a tiny island in East Nusa Tenggara province erupted.

AN Egyptian judge has ordered a media blackout during the next phase of the retrial of Hosni Mubarak. Judge Mahmoud el-Rachidi said the sessions, to be held on 19-21 October, would involve national security issues.
Mubarak, 85, appeared in court on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising. Defence lawyers are seeking to blame Islamists from the Muslim Brotherhood and foreign forces for the deaths of about 850 people killed in the unrest.
Mubarak was jailed for life in June last year for contributing to the killings. But he appealed against his sentence and a retrial was ordered. He is on trial along with his two sons, the former interior minister, and six security chiefs.
Certain parts of his original trial were also held behind closed doors. Judge Rachidi had promised more transparency with the retrial. However, the judge said on Saturday that all journalists would be barred from the next hearings and forbidden from quoting lawyers.
"This decision does not go against my previous promise to the media, because I had announced from the start that the people will know about everything, except for proceedings of hearings, in order for us to allow the witness to testify," he said.
The interior minister's lawyer said the people called to testify had information on who killed the protesters, and "which foreign factions joined forces with the Muslim Brotherhood in the events of the 28 January [2011] to cause chaos and the killing of protesters".
The Muslim Brotherhood's candidate won Egypt's first free election last year, but was eventually overthrown by the military after widespread protests. Mubarak was freed from custody shortly after the overthrow, and placed under house arrest.
During his 29-year rule the Brotherhood was outlawed.

Heh.

Jules Schratter Tak Boleh Berenggang Dengan Yuna?
Debot rasa time tu diaorang nampak sangat sweet!
Senang kata Debot tengok mereka ni seperti susahlah nak berenggang!

Betul Ke Selepas Ella, Shae Intai Dato` Siti Untuk Berduet?
Bila sebut nama penyanyi, Shae sahaja, Debot pasti teringatkan lagu popular dia iaitu Sayang. Lagu Sayang tu memang tak asing lagi, dari budak kecil sehinggalah ke orang dewasa. Semua orang tahu menyanyi lagu Sayang sekarang ni.
Not bad jugak Debot dengar Ella nyanyi lagu ini.

KOTA KINABALU: An elderly fisherman was shot dead after he refused to hand over his boat’s fuel to three armed men during a robbery at sea off the east coast Tawau district.
Wilson Ortis, 68, died of a bullet wound in the face during the 5pm incident in waters off Inderasabah on Saturday. Tawau district police deputy chief Supt Keong Ho Eng said on Sunday that Wilson had gone out to sea earlier.
The two men were pulling in their nets when they were approached by the three men in another vessel. ‘’They demanded fuel but the Ortis refused and one of the men pulled out a pistol and shot him point blank, causing him to collapse inside the boat,” Keong said.
Two of the armed men then removed the outboard engine in Ortis’s boat as well as its fuel tank while the third men held down his friend. After the three men made their getaway, Ortis’s friend managed to call for help from other fishermen who towed the boat back to Tawau.
Keong said Malaysian security personnel had intensified their patrols in the area.

TANGKAK: A 29-year-old police lance corporal shot and killed his wife and father-in-law using his service revolver, before turning the same weapon on himself yesterday. The man shot his wife at their home in Felda Chemplak in Labis, Segamat, with the .38 revolver, before taking their 3-year son with him on an hour's drive to Tangkak.
He used the same weapon to gun down his father-in-law at his home in Jalan Sialang, Batu 17, at 7pm. He later shot himself. He died on the spot, while his father-in-law, who was shot twice in the head, died at Tangkak Hospital.
The dead were identified as Fadzly Omar, his wife, Norakmal Abdul Kadir, 26, a school clerk, and his father-in-law, Abdul Kadir Md Arif, 65, a businessman. Police rushed to Kadir's house in Tangkak upon receiving a report, before going to the Labis house to find Normala's body sprawled in a pool of blood.
It is learnt that Normala worked in Tangkak and returned to their house in Labis every weekend to meet her husband, who was posted at the police beat base in Felda Chemplak, and son.
It is learnt that the man had handed over his son to a sister-in-law outside the home before going into the living room to confront Kadir. He fired two shots at Kadir before turning the gun on himself A witness, who declined to be identified, said she heard popping sounds from the victim's house at 7.15 pm, which she initially thought were firecrackers.
She said she did not think much about it until one of the victim's children rushed to her house and told her that his father had been shot by his son-in-law. "I went to the victim's house. When I got to the house, I saw two bodies at the living room." Earlier, the witness said she saw the suspect arrive at Kadir's house with his 3-year-old son at 7pm.
