Vietnam's legendary General Vo Nguyen Giap, whose guerrilla tactics defeated the French and American armies, died Friday at the age of 102, prompting an outpouring of tributes for the independence hero. "I can confirm that General Giap died at 6:08 pm (1108 GMT) today," a government source told AFP on condition of anonymity.
A military source confirmed the time of Giap's death at Hanoi's 108 military hospital, where he had been living for the last three years. He died surrounded by his family. State-run online newspaper VNExpress said his body has been moved from the special care zone to the morgue at the hospital with a guard of honour to pay respect.
"Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap has passed away - brilliant military strategist who once told me that we were an 'honorable enemy'," former US Republican presidential candidate John McCain, a former navy pilot who was shot down and famously held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, tweeted. Giap, second only to late revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh as modern Vietnam's most revered figure, was the founding father of the Vietnam People's Army, whose guerrilla tactics inspired anti-colonial fighters worldwide.
"He's a mythic, heroic figure for Vietnam," said Carl Thayer, an Australia-based scholar of the country. Vietnamese Internet users immediately began paying tribute to the general, who remained hugely popular in Vietnam despite being relegated to the political sidelines after the war. "Rest In Peace the hero of the people. You will always be our greatest general," one wrote, in a posting typical of the outpouring of grief which erupted online as news of his death emerged.
Another Facebook commentator called for a day of national mourning. "(Giap) contributed lots to our Vietnamese nation," Thanh Trang Le wrote. Giap, born on August 25, 1911 into a well-off peasant family, was a self-taught soldier whose only military lesson came from an old encyclopaedia entry describing the mechanism of hand grenades.
He went on to secure victory over the French in 1954 at Dien Bien Phu, the battle that ended Paris' rule in Indochina and precipitated nearly two decades of US involvement in Vietnam. "General Vo Nguyen Giap is one of the most talented military strategists and most famous generals, not just in Vietnam, but in world military history,"
Vietnamese historian Phan Huy Le told AFP. His greatest triumph will always be the Dien Bien Phu victory, based on an astounding logistical feat by his Viet Minh fighters, who surprised the French by hauling their artillery into surrounding jungle hills from where they pounded enemy positions below.
"It was the spark that lit the powder keg for the empire. Less than six months after Dien Bien Phu, the Algerian war (for independence) began with the All Saints Day attacks. Dien Bien Phu was effectively where it all started," said French historian Hugues Tertrais.
For two decades after Dien Bien Phu, Giap, a former history teacher who was fluent in French, continued to command his forces as they battled American troops and their surrogate regime in South Vietnam until final victory on April 30, 1975. The fall of Saigon fuelled his near mythical status overseas as a master strategist and inspired liberation movements everywhere. But Giap's success on the battlefield had earned him some powerful enemies at home -- including party chief Le Duan -- and after the war, in 1980, Giap lost his post as defence minister.
He was eased out of the Politburo in 1982 and left politics officially in 1991. Yet he continued to speak out until well into his 90s about sensitive issues such as corruption and bauxite mining, and his popularity, particularly among the young, remained undiminished. He is survived by Dang Bich Ha, his wife since 1949, and four children.

LOS ANGELES: US pop icon Madonna was raped at knifepoint when she was young and newly arrived in New York, she revealed in an article published Friday.
In a piece for Harper’s Bazaar, she also talked about her time living in Britain married to director Guy Ritchie, saying there is “nothing more beautiful than the English countryside,” and revealed that she is now studying the Koran. Describing her arrival in the Big Apple from the Midwest, where she grew up, she wrote:
“New York wasn’t everything I thought it would be. It did not welcome me with open arms,” and described “paying my rent by posing nude for art classes, staring at people staring at me naked.” “The first year, I was held up at gunpoint. Raped on the roof of a building. I was dragged up to with a knife in my back, and had my apartment broken into three times.
I don’t know why; I had nothing of value after they took my radio the first time. “The tall buildings and the massive scale of New York took my breath away. The sizzling-hot sidewalks and the noise of the traffic and the electricity of the people rushing by me on the streets was a shock to my neurotransmitters,” she added. Moving on a decade a time, she recalled being a pop star in her 20s, embracing Kabbalah in her 30s, before marrying Ritchie and moving to Britain by the age of 45.
“I consider moving to a foreign country to be a very daring act. It wasn’t easy for me .. I didn’t understand pub culture. I didn’t understand that being openly ambitious was frowned upon. Once again I felt alone. “But I stuck it out and I found my way, and I grew to love English wit, Georgian architecture, sticky toffee pudding, and the English countryside. "There is nothing more beautiful than the English countryside." A decade later she is divorced and in New York.
“I have started making films, which is probably the most challenging and rewarding thing I have ever done. "I am building schools for girls in Islamic countries and studying the Koran. I think it is important to study all the holy books."

This picture taken on October 3, 2013 shows Myanmar's 25-year-old Moe Set Wine (L) holding her tropy after she was selected as the first Miss Universe contestant to represent Myanmar in more than 50 years during a contest in Yangon

YANGON: With a whiff of controversy and not a bikini in sight, a US-educated business graduate was selected as the first Miss Universe contestant to represent Myanmar in more than 50 years.
Moe Set Wine will take her place on stage at the global beauty pageant in Moscow next month, reflecting dramatic political and social changes in the former junta-ruled nation which last fielded a Miss Universe contender in 1961.
"I feel like now I am part of the history and I feel like a soldier that is doing something for the country and my people," she said after winning the trophy late on Thursday. "I'm still in shock. I still can't believe it. I feel really happy, because now I get the chance to represent my country," added the 25-year-old, who has a BA in business marketing from California Lutheran University.
According to the contest website, Moe Set Wine's ambition is to "obtain self-accomplishment and be able to help/give the people in need." Hemlines are rising in the nation formerly known as Burma as it opens up to the world after decades of iron-fisted military rule ended in 2011.
President Thein Sein's quasi-civilian government has released hundreds of political prisoners, welcomed Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy party into parliament and scrapped draconian censorship measures.
But while many young people are embracing the fashion revolution, not everyone approves of scanty dress. When racy shots of one model wearing a two-piece swimsuit appeared online a few years ago, she received abuse and threats. So the Miss Universe hopefuls were careful not to bare any midriff in the swimsuit section, while long dresses were the garment of choice elsewhere in the show
. "My personal view is that the competition presents a good image of our country, but if you look at what they wear, it is not what a lot of people here like," Deputy Culture Minister Than Swe told AFP. Songwriter Saw Khuse, who was one of the judges, said he was "very proud" to take part in the event.
"After 50 years, I am very glad that Myanmar has been invited to participate in this kind of competition," he added. Myanmar's traditional dress, which is still mandatory in high schools, universities and most state workplaces, is the demure "longyi" -- a sheet of cotton or silk cloth wrapped around the waist and stretching to the feet.
But the younger generation, especially young urban women, are increasingly shunning the national garb and embracing unconventional alternatives as they brush aside concerns about morals and modesty. The country has succumbed to the "Korean wave" -- the South Korean cultural invasion that has flooded much of Asia and the wider world with its soap operas, films, "K-pop" and clothing.
"Myanmar people dared not wear clothes like this in the past. Now things are improving, and people dare to wear things, so as a designer I can create what I like. So I'm glad things are changing," said Htay Htay Tin, who designed the contestants' outfits. What about the swimsuits? "I wouldn't dare to wear one, but they are part of the competition," she said.

GEORGE TOWN: Those who wish to remove their tattoos should opt for laser treatment carried out by certified medical practitioners.
Plastic surgeon Dr Lee Kim Siea said such treatment is safer compared to other methods such as skin grafting or dermabrasion (removing the top layers of skin). He said the method would require one or more visits to the clinic, depending on the colour and depth of the ink penetration.
“In fact, this technology has existed for at least 20 years. “I have performed this method hundreds of times to remove tattoos and there is no problem so far. “The risk is minimal and there is no report of skin infection,” he said.
Dr Lee, who has 17 years of experience in the related field, was commenting on the case of would-be policeman N. Dinesh Nair, 25, who died on Sept 25, two weeks after he underwent a tattoo removal procedure at a private clinic in Sungai Petani. The initial probe revealed that Dinesh could have died of excessive bleeding due to skin infections and other medical complications.
It was reported that he had begged a private doctor to remove the tattoos on Sept 12 as he had an impending police recruitment interview. On Dinesh’s death, Dr Lee said it could be due to allergy to the medication and anaesthetic.
Wan Ling Beauty Academy brand director Nicholas Ku said they would factor age, health conditions and skin allergy reaction before carrying out tattoo removal on customers using the laser technique. “We will turn away those with diabetes, hormone imbalance and heart-related problems.
“Those who have sensitive skin and are allergic to certain medications will not be entertained as well,” he said. Ku said he had carried out such techniques on many customers, especially would-be brides and grooms. “Many expressed regrets about their tattoos.
Some women also wanted to remove their tattoos so that they look better wearing V-neck or low-backed clothes. “There were also some who wanted to get rid of tattoos because the design no longer looked nice on their flabby skin,” he said. Ku said black tattoos were easier to remove while pink and green were difficult. “We would normally advise customers to return a month after the first treatment. That’s the recovery period needed before we perform a second one,” he said.

MADRID: Emergency services say a man has died after being crushed by grapes during the annual harvest in the central Spanish wine producing province of Castilla-La Mancha.
A local rescue service center said Friday the man was pulled out of a winery grape reception bay he fell into the day before, just as a truck unloaded 5.5 tons (5 metric tons) of grapes ready for crushing into juice for winemaking.
Ambulance operators and firefighters tried to resuscitate the man — identified only by his initials, A.O. — but he was declared dead just before midnight Thursday. With around 465,350 hectares (1,790 square miles) of vineyards, Castilla-La Mancha is considered to have more land dedicated to grape cultivation than any province in the world.

Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi

Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi

The world's most expensive necklace goes on sale this month at a jewellery show in Singapore. Known as L'Incomparable, the necklace is valued at £34 million (RM173 million).
It was created by luxury jeweller Mouawad and features a yellow, internally flawless diamond of more than 407 carats suspended from a rose gold setting that is studded with 90 white diamonds weighing nearly 230 carats
. Despite the astronomical price tag, "serious interest" has been expressed by a couple of potential buyers from Asia, said Jean Nasr, managing director of Mouawad in Singapore.
"People who will get something like this are looking at it from a different perspective because this is definitely an investment piece," he said. The necklace, whose centrepiece diamond was found by chance in a pile of mining rubble by a young girl in the Democratic Republic of Congo about 30 years ago, will be the flashiest item on offer at the Singapore JewelFest.
While Singapore boasts a very low crime rate, security officials are taking no chances after the daylight heist of about $136 million (RM347 million) worth of jewellery on show at a hotel in the French Riviera resort of Cannes in July. Security includes armed guards, plainclothes supervisors, cameras, motion detectors and bullet-proof display cases.
Every night the piece will go back to a vault via armoured truck. L'Incomparable was completed in 2012 and certified as the priciest necklace in existence by Guinness World Records earlier this year.

Asia, especially China, has become an important growth area for sellers of pricey jewellery, cars, boats, wine, artwork and other lavish items.
Sotheby's in Hong Kong has unveiled a pink diamond that is set to be the most valuable ever to go under the hammer at a Geneva auction later this year. The 59-carat diamond is estimated to be worth more than £37 million (RM189 million).

PUTRAJAYA: A university student is in the running to become the country's first female astronaut after winning the AXE Apollo International Space Academy (AASA): Malaysian Chapter challenge recently. Roshini Muniam, 27, will be Malaysia’s sole representative at the AXE Apollo International Space Camp in Florida , USA , this December.
She said she was both nervous and thrilled to face the the contest's challenges, including being tested against the effects of gravity, which can take a toll on her mental and physical condition. Roshini will be among 100 camp participants from all over the world to take part in the contest. “I’m grateful to have been chosen to represent Malaysia at the international level."
"Only 22 out of the 100 participants will be selected to be an astronaut so I hope that my dream of becoming the country's first female astronaut will be achieved through the support and prayers of all Malaysians," Roshini said this when met after meeting Deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan at the ministry here today.
The contest, which could see Roshini becoming the second Malaysian to enter space, was held in conjunction with legend astronaut Buzz Aldrin’s endorsement of the AXE Apollo deodorant spray. The announcement made by AXE, a men’s grooming product brand, marked the culmination of a six-month programme to recruit cadets for the space odyssey and the creation of the academy.
Some 2,500 Malaysians participated in the contest, of which 160 were shortlisted before Roshini was announced as the winner. Roshini said she came to know about the competition from advertisements on the internet. "I never thought my past time of watching videos of astronauts could bring me this close to my dream of going into space,” she said.

A news presenter was left feeling a little embarrassed after an almighty slip-up by his production team. Ceskatelevize - one of the Czech Republic’s main broadcasters - began its 4pm broadcast with presenter Daniel Takac.
As he begins to speak, a man’s genitalia can be seen peeping out from behind his head. The TV news station was immediately flooded with complaints from startled viewers who must have thought they had stumbled across an episode of Embarassing Bodies.
Despite Mr Takac insisting he was unaware what was happening, newsroom journalists can be seen laughing in the background. The phallus was then replaced by a picture of a green vegetable. A spokesman for the channel said: "The image was actually part of a documentary, but we should have been aware of timing and not had that particular scene playing when we went on air.
"It was a silly mistake." But regulators say indecent images like this are banned from day time TV and have warned that the broadcaster may face a severe fine.

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton set the pace in first free practice at the Korean Grand Prix on Friday as injury-hit Finn Kimi Raikkonen walked away from a late crash.
Hamilton, whose debut season with Mercedes is in danger of petering out after disappointing results in the past two races, was quickest with a time of 1min 39.630sec.
That was just 0.037sec ahead of world championship leader Sebastian Vettel and 0.186sec better than Vettel's departing Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber.
Lotus driver Raikkonen, fourth in the title race, was eighth quickest but the Finn spun off towards the end of the session and slammed into a wall.
The Ferrari-bound Raikkonen appeared to walk away unharmed but the incident will spark fresh concern over his long-term back injury which flared again last month in Singapore.
There were heads in hands in the Lotus pit after they watched images of Raikkonen careering into the concrete wall.
Asked by one of his engineers what happened, the famously terse Raikkonen replied sardonically over the team radio: "I hit the wall."
Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg was fourth quickest, ahead of McLaren's Jenson Button in fifth, followed by Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Lotus's Romain Grosjean.
Sergio Perez of McLaren and Alonso's Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa rounded out the top 10. Friday's second free practice session starts at 2:00 pm (0500 GMT).

A couple have told Sky News how they were physically forced into an abortion by the Chinese authorities, three months before their child was due to be born.
At 4am last Friday, a group of 20 officials from the Shandong Province Family Planning Commission forced their way into the home of Zhou Guoqiang and his wife Liu Xinwen. The officials kicked down the door of the family's home.
Mr Zhou was held down while his wife was pulled from her bed and taken away. Liu Xinwen, 33, was taken to the People's Hospital of Fangzi District in Weifang City where she was injected with an abortion-inducing drug.
Her baby, which she would later discover was a boy, died a day later in her womb. It took a further day for the foetus to be delivered. Her husband was not told where she had been taken. It took him five hours to find her at the hospital.
By then, the injection had been given. Sky News met the couple six days later. Mr Zhou had invited us to the family's modest home in a rural corner of the province to hear their story. We found his wife lying in the bed she had been taken from a week earlier. She was sobbing quietly.
"I miss him." she said. "I didn't get to see him. I would be even more upset if I had seen him. "Baby, I'm sorry. We were not meant to be. You rest in peace in heaven. We will pray for you. We hope your next life is better."

Her heartbreak is the most brutal consequence of China's one-child policy. The law is designed to keep the country's population in check.
It prevents couples from having more than one child with a few exceptions in some rural provinces. The policy is supposed to be enforced through financial penalties and not forced abortions. But in some provinces, over-zealous local officials, keen to keep within their birth quotas, break the law and terminate pregnancies by force.
"They don't have any humanity. They are not humans." Liu Xinwen said. "They must have children and parents too. But they don't have any conscience. This is how China is." Mr Zhou told how the officials held him down on the sofa while others took his wife away. In all, there were 16 male officials and four females. We then sit down to look at photos he had taken in the hospital room.
They are almost indescribably graphic. One photograph shows Liu Xinwen lying on the bed. Beside her, on the floor, is a bucket. Inside is her aborted child. Several other images show the foetus. It is fully formed. "His nose, ears, mouth are all there." Mr Zhou said. "It is a child that would have lived if not for the forced abortion. It's because of their cruelty
. Look, his hand is very obvious." Mr Zhou broke down as he recalled the moment he arrived in the hospital, just minutes after the injection had been administered. "My wife was lying in bed. I asked her: 'Have you been injected?' She said 'yes'. I asked if the baby was still moving. She said 'not much'. "After that, I didn't want my wife to see my crying. I went outside.
I cried, but only for a while because I needed to return to comfort her. She was very sad. She cried, day and night. "Every time I heard babies' voices from other wards, I could hardly control myself. I had to go out. I have lost my child. I am speechless, words can't describe my feelings." He claimed that his wife was forced to sign papers which said she had agreed to the abortion.
When she initially refused, he said they told her that if she did not sign the papers, they would arrest her husband and she would have nothing. We have not been able to independently verify this. The couple already have one son. Zhou Junfeng is 10. As we talk to his parents, he runs around the house playing. He is oblivious to the grief around him.
After Zhou Junfeng was born his mother underwent a state-proscribed procedure to insert a contraceptive coil into her body. She says that this "forced sterilisation" must have failed, allowing her to fall pregnant for a second time. The couple had the option to tell the authorities about the pregnancy the moment they discovered it, four months after conception.
They decided not to come clean because they were concerned that an abortion may be forced on them. Instead, they said they planned to tell the authorities after the birth and then offer to pay the fine. This is common in parts of China and is sometimes acceptable. Mr Zhou offered to take us to the hospital to see the room where the abortion happened.
Inside the hospital, we saw the room which is part of a fully functioning maternity ward; it is not a backstreet abortion clinic. We found just two members of staff. One refused to comment. The other, a young nurse, was reluctant and a little startled to find a foreign TV crew in her hospital. "I don't know if it's forced or not. And I don't know the reason for it," she said.
"This is a maternity ward; there are many reasons for abortions. I don't know the specific reason for this case and it's not my place to care." Sky News has approached the Shandong Health and Family Planning Commission, the central government Family Planning Commission in Beijing and the Chinese Embassy in London for a response to this case.
At midday British time, the embassy told Sky News they were looking into the case and would provide a more detailed response later.

 George Clooney

Semestinya tiada yang boleh menggantikan George Clooney. Satu-satunya lelaki berusia yang mampu membuatkan rambut beruban nampak seksi. Selain itu, George sangat kelakar, pasti menghiburkan hati apabila sedang sedih.

Shah Rukh Khan dan Idris Elba

Siapa bilang kami hanya sukakan lelaki berkulit putih?

 Daniel Craig

Tidak mungkin kami lupakan James Bond. Hati pasti terlompat girang kalau hari-hari bangun sebelah Daniel Craig. Jadi, adakah anda sanggup kahwin dengan lelaki tua?
