Jane-Austens-Emma-to-get-21st-century-update/
Best-selling British author Alexander McCall Smith is to pen a new version of Jane Austen's classic novel "Emma" with a 21st century twist, his publisher announced on Friday.
McCall Smith, who has sold over 20 million copies of his "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" series, said being commissioned to re-write Austen's 1815 original was "like being asked to eat a box of delicious chocolates".
"Not only is 'Emma' one of the finest novels in the English language, but it is possibly Jane Austen's most thought-provoking and interesting book," the 65-year-old said. "Writing a contemporary version of Emma is both a privilege and a real challenge."
The book will see McCall Smith swap the setting of his detective novels -- Botswana's capital Gaborone -- for modern-day England. Publisher HarperCollins said the new version of "Emma" would be released late next year. Kate Elton, head of fiction at HarperCollins, said the publisher was "thrilled" to have signed up McCall Smith.
"The novels of Austen and McCall Smith share some essential qualities which make them enduringly popular with readers –- gently poking fun at their characters' 'follies and inconsistencies' as Austen would have it, and a sense that people can learn from this so that goodness wins out in the end.
"It promises to be an amazing pairing." The book is the fourth to be announced as part of the Austen Project, tasking authors with reworking Austen's witty 19th century romances for a contemporary audience. The first book in the series, Joanna Trollope's new version of "Sense and Sensibility", will be published this month, followed by Val McDermid's rewrite of "Northanger Abbey" due early next year.
Curtis Sittenfeld's updated "Pride and Prejudice" will be published in late 2015. Born to Scottish parents in what is now Zimbabwe, McCall Smith worked for years as a professor of medical law before penning the adventures of Botswanan private investigator Precious Ramotswe. He has since written several other series, and over thirty books for children.

MV Resolusi Jawab Gosip Kilafairy Menari Ghairah

BY HER own admission, Miley Cyrus is a mess — “a strategic hot mess” to be exact. The former Disney star told documentary makers that her crazy, twerking antics have a controlled, fun-filled purpose.

“People can think that it was just like a hot mess, but it’s a strategic hot mess,” she told MTV’s “Miley: The Movement,” which aired Wednesday night. “Right now I can be exactly who I want to be. I just want to have fun.”

If viewers thought her provocative, booty-shaking act at MTV’s Video Music Awards was shocking, Cyrus said she really wanted to go topless for the televised event. But she thought better of it. “I tried, but I don’t think MTV’s going to allow it,” Miley said. Britney Spears made a cameo in the “The Movement” and Cyrus gushed, telling the “Toxic” singer how much she idolized her.

“Eight-year-old me would have been p—ing [her] pants right now,” she told Britney. The daughter of “Achy Breaky Heart” singer Billy Ray Cyrus has high hopes – and wants to be remembered just like her childhood idol Spears.Miley specifically cited Spears’ famous 2003 smooch at the VMAs with Madonna as the moment she hopes to replicate.

“I want to be hot like Britney,” Cyrus said. Miley then jumped ahead and virtually pronounced herself to be the next Britney. “The way I am about Britney, that is the way people are about me,” the 20-year-old Cyrus said. “She [Spears] was my first record. I was a lot of people’s first idol. I’ll be a die hard fan of Britney always.”

The “Party in the U.S.A.” singer said every performance has to be the “biggest and the best.” “I do get so overwhelmed when I’m going to perform because everything has to be perfect,” she said. “If I’m going to do it, it has to be the biggest and the best.’

A Haj pilgrim praying near the Kaabah in Makkah.

IN 10 days time, Muslims worldwide will celebrate Aidiladha or Hari Raya Haji (festival of the pilgrimage). While Aidilfitri celebrates the success of fasting during the month of Ramadan, Aidiladha marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage period in Makkah which falls on the 10th of Zulhijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic Hijrah calendar.
The highlight of the celebration is the Korban ritual which is done in memory of the sacrifice made by the Prophets Ibrahim and Ismail. The act of sacrifice symbolises renouncing or willingness to give up things close to our hearts to follow the command of Allah.
In Malaysia, festivities usually equal time for 'balik kampung' and many people are expected to go back to their hometowns and villages for the celebration. Although not as widespread compared Aidilfitri, the air of celebration in both 'kampungs' and towns can still be felt.Who are the people behind the scene, who makes sure that the Korban ritual are adhered to properly?
Malaysian Digest meet up with some of them to find out what Aidiladha is all about and the process of Korban. Dr. Zainul Abidin Ismail, chairman of Korban committee for Saidina Umar al-Khattab mosque in Bukit Damansara said Korban is an ibadah (act of worship) that is sunat muakkad (highly recommended). The Korban rites, he said, can be performed anytime after the Aidiladha prayer up to before sunset of the fourth day or 13 Zulhijjah.
"A Muslim can offer either a goat or sheep, or one seventh of a cow, buffalo or camel as Korban animal, where seven people can agree to offer a cow, buffalo or camel at a time. He said Korban nowadays are becoming more widespread compared to the previous years. City folk now want and are willing to take part in the process of Korban. Realising this change of trend, the mosque catered to the needs and even provide 'packages' for interested individuals to participate.
"What we do is, the slaughtering are done here and a large portion of the meat will be distributed to the poor so they can all join in the celebration. For those staying outside the mosque coverage area or kariah, Dr Zainul Abidin said the committee members would go to these areas to conduct and oversee the entire process.

"Besides localised Korban rites, we also provide services to those who want to contribute to Muslims in other states of Malaysia and other countries.
"Last year, we contributed several cows for Korban to Sekolah Agama Maahad Mahmud in Kedah and a madrasah in Sabah," he said, adding that the mosque also sent to religious schools in Kedah, Perak, Johor, Sabah and Orang Asli villages in Kelantan.
"As a matter of fact, we have exceeded our target this year. Currently we have 22 cows to be sacrificed here and eight more outside our areas. This year, there is no camel though," he said. Dr Zainul Abidin said this years' Korban have been slated for religious schools in Yan, Pendang, Kuala Kedah and Merbok in Kedah, and Kampung Jelga, an Orang Asli village in Gua Musang, Kelantan.
An experienced slaughter, Mohd Badri Mohd Yusof said the method of slaughtering animal is not cruel because it is done based on certain clear guidelines found in the al Quran and Sunnah. "Animals must be slaughtered in a humane way, without subjecting to any brutality or unnecessary suffering," he said. "It is not an easy task
. I do feel sad for the animals especially when their eyes start to water. But I keep myself strong and carry on with the believe and conviction that it is all in the name of Allah," he said. Another slaughter Ahmad Kamal from Ampang said during Korban period, he usually sacrificed around seven to eight cows and three goats. He said ideally, the slaughtering should be done by the person making the Korban. If not, at least the person should be present during the process.
"Nowadays, people just state their intention to me or other authorised slaughter as in the cases for overseas distribution," Ahmad Kamal said to become an authorised slaughter, he underwent courses by the Veterinary Department and Selangor Islamic Religious Department. "We also have to renew our certificate each year to remain active and follow guideline set by the Malaysian Islamic Religious Development Department (Jakim)." he said.
In the end, he said Aidiladha should be about remembering Prophet Ibrahim, who has set an example for us to remain patient and submit to the will of Allah in times of trials and tribulations.

Students at the Hungarian university of Kaposvar study wearing their underwear only in protest against a harsh dress code decreed by the college head.

STUDENTS at a Hungarian university attended class wearing only their underwear to protest against a dress code ordered by the college head.
In a letter to students on Wednesday, the rector of Kaposvar University in southwest Hungary wrote that a conservative dress code - dark suits and shoes for men; jacket, blouse and trousers or long skirts for women - must be adhered to when attending classes or exams.
"From October 1, there is also no place in the university for mini-skirts, flip-flops, heavy make-up, inappropriate fashion accessories, or unkempt fingernails and hair," the letter continued.
The rector did make an allowance for lighter clothing during warm summer days, prompting some students to make the underwear protest.
"We were appropriately dressed but the class room was so warm we removed some clothing as is permitted," said one student. The protestors included male and female students. Students plan to wear flip-flops and beach towels at another protest on October 7.

AS Asia-Pacific leaders prepare to meet in Bali for the APEC Summit, where the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement trade deal features high on the agenda, medical humanitarian organisation Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has urged governments not to make political trade-offs during negotiations that will harm access to affordable medicines.
"So many millions of lives have been saved because of the availability of affordable generic medicines, but we could watch this important progress unravel as leaders trade away health in the TPP negotiations," said executive director of MSF's Access Campaign, Dr Manica Balasegaram. "We can't let the lives of millions of people get entangled in the political hard bargaining as the US government pushes for the negotiations on this trade deal to wrap up,"
Dr Manica said in a statement. The statement said the US proposals in the TPP negotiations "involve the most egregious intellectual property provisions ever seen in a proposed trade deal with both developed and developing countries." "They cover multiple avenues for multinational pharmaceutical companies to lengthen their monopolies by extending patents on medicines through a common pharmaceutical industry practice known as 'evergreening'.
This keeps medicine prices high for longer by blocking competition from generics," it said. The negotiations have entered a critical stage, where governments are being urged to close the deal before the end of the year. After months of facing opposition to their initial proposal, the US government may now be proposing differential treatment on the intellectual property chapter, where several of the poorest countries in the negotiations have a temporary and limited exemption from some of the provisions.
However, this would still leave these countries with intellectual property provisions that far exceed what is required under international trade rules, which themselves are already choking off the supply of affordable medicines in developing countries. MSF said millions of poor people in other TPP countries will be left with unaffordable prices for the medicines they need.
"Nobody should be fooled by this latest US proposal, which purports to lessen the negative impact this trade deal will have on access to medicines in the poorest countries in the negotiations," said Judit Rius, manager of MSF's Access Campaign in the US. Pharmaceutical companies are lobbying for the US government to demand 12 years of so-called "data exclusivity" on biologic drugs in the TPP negotiations, which will further delay the entry of more affordable versions of these medicines.
"If the US were serious about protecting innovation and access to medicines in this agreement, it would not propose stricter levels of intellectual property protection", said Rius. "Stricter intellectual property rules limit innovation by creating monopolies that restrict innovative companies and researchers from developing new or adapted medical tools.
"Instead, it encourages some pharmaceutical companies to focus their business on extending monopolies on existing medicines, rather than developing new medicines that could truly respond to the health needs of people," Rius added.

LIEW DAREN has stressed that the national players have no business losing to independent and state shuttlers as he began his campaign for his first local title in the Kuala Lumpur Open at KLBA Stadium in Cheras yesterday.
Daren himself has been a culprit in the past for under-performing in local tournaments and his defeat to then back-up player Misbun Ramdan Misbun saw the coaches taking him to task last year. While Ramdan went on to win his first national crown and later left the BA of Malaysia (BAM), Daren was dropped from the Korea Open in January.
Daren, who defeated KL shuttler Oh Soon Keon 21-14, 21-13, said the new internal ranking system will put pressure on them but national shuttlers should stay ahead as all their needs are looked after by BAM. "I will take the local tournaments seriously and we (national players) should not be beaten by the outsiders. We train full-time and we have complete facilities and we cannot lose to the others," said Daren.
"The internal ranking means we are under pressure but we must work hard and do well. I have tried so many times and I am hoping to win my first local event. "I will be playing in the Denmark and French Opens and I aim to reach at least the quarter-finals. It is difficult to defend my French Open title as both Lee Chong Wei and Chen Long (of China) are playing in Paris." Daren will play back-up player Tan Kian Meng, who defeated Nur Azryn Ayub 21-19, 15-21, 21-19, in the quarter-finals today.
Ramdan also advanced to the last eight after beating national junior Soong Joo Ven 21-17, 21-13 and will meet Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin today. Iskandar defeated former national player Loo Yik Xiang 21-16, 21-18 in the second round. By K.M. Boopathy

TAMARA MELLON has told how her business partner, Jimmy Choo did not design a single shoe for the multi-million dollar brand named after him.
During an interview this morning on the Today show, the 46-year-old revealed that she never received a sketch from him during the years they worked together; 'Not one', she clarified. Unaware of Mr Choo's lack of design nous when they joined forces, she said that she had to quickly hone her skills and use experience from her fashion writing days to guide her.
Ms Mellon, who worked at British Vogue for five years soon after dropping out of school, said: 'The original idea was for Jimmy to design the collection and I would run the operations of the business. 'But it soon became very clear that Jimmy's skill was in making shoes.
He’s a cobbler.' In her new memoir, In My Shoes, the mother-of-one reveals how she turned to Mr Choo's niece, Sandra Choi for help. While she would come up with the ideas, Ms Choi would sketch them out and the two of them would go to vintage stores along Portobello Road in London, to look for inspiration.
Her creations soon became a hit with A-listers, including Victoria Beckham and Princess Diana, and in 1998 a pair made their way into the script of Sex And The City - turning Jimmy Choo into a household name overnight.
However, it was Mr Choo who went on to gain global recognition, not Ms Mellon. Noting her increasing bitterness about the situation, she writes in another part of her book: 'By the end of 2000, Jimmy Choo was turning a profit of around £3 million a year. 'We had our own London boutique and were represented at 450 more stores, including Harrods and Selfridges.
'To top it off, we’d won a British Fashion Council Award, which Jimmy insisted on accepting on our behalf, even though his design contribution had been nil.'

Ms Mellon said from there her relationship with Mr Choo deteriorated to the point that any conversation was 'out of the question'. Eventually, after much confrontation, Mr Choo sold his share in the company in 2001. Ms Mellon, who remained with the firm until 2011, said the years that followed were tough as she dealt with the death of her father in 2004 and a divorce from her 'playboy' husband in 2005.
While it might have been more sensible for Ms Mellon to have gone into business alone, she admits that she met Mr Choo after going through a rough period in her life. 'One glass of wine for me turned into 6 o’clock in the morning and calling the coke dealer and then realizing, "Oh my God, I've got to be at work in three hours,'" she recalled.
After losing her job at Vogue at the age 27, Ms Mellon entered rehab. The experience marked a turning point for her. She emerged determined to pursue her dream of starting her own shoe business. That’s when she reached out to Mr Choo, a cobbler from London’s East End whom she knew from her Vogue days. Today, armed with a wealth of business experience, she gearing up for the launch her own namesake label this fall.
The Tamara Mellon line will be carried online at tamaramellon.com and at stand-alone stores landing in New York, where she is based with her daughter 'Minty', in November and London by 2014. The line will of course carry shoes, but also will include ready-to-wear clothing and handbags. She calls it 'affordable luxury' with a prices ranging from $295 to $4,500.
She concluded on the Today show: 'If I have a bid of equanimity now, and I'm better at standing my ground, it's only because I've fought my way through the rites of passage. “I can't believe that it's actually happened . . . I had the dream and the vision. And now it's a reality.'
In her memoir, she attributes her success and determination to a childhood that revolved around a difficult relationship with her mother and unwavering support from her father.

LAZIO captain Stefano Mauri has had his ban for failing to report matchfixing increased to nine months after losing an appeal against the original six-month suspension.
Italy's federal court of appeal (CGF) increased the ban on Wednesday and said that a 40,000-euro ($54,400) fine imposed on Lazio would be increased to 50,000 euro, the Italian soccer federation (FIGC) said in a statement. "The CGF...rejects the appeals of the footballer Stefano Mauri and of Lazio football club," it said.
The player's legal team, who described the ruling as "not only unjust but incomprehensible", have 10 days to contest the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Mauri, 33, had initially been banned for six months by the football federation for keeping quiet about match-fixing in Lazio's game against Lecce in May 2011.
The midfielder was one of eight players accused of sporting fraud relating to the Lecce match and a game against Genoa, both of which ended in 4-2 wins to the Rome side. The ruling means that Mauri's season is effectively over, with the ban keeping him out until at least May 2. His contract with the Serie A club expires at the end of the season.

WORLD number one Serena Williams saved three set points on her way to edging Russian Maria Kirilenko 7-5 7-5 on Thursday to advance to the quarter-finals of the China Open with her 70th win of the season. The top-seeded American had won all seven of her previous encounters against the 18th-ranked Kirilenko but was forced to dig deep on many occasions to ensure her eighth victory over the Russian would be completed in straight sets.
Kirilenko secured the first break of the match in the ninth game and had three set points on her serve in the next but Williams rallied to break back before sealing the set after her opponent double faulted. "I just thought, 'what else can I do except fight for this point and the next point,'"
Williams told the WTA website of the prospect of losing the first set. "Maybe I got lucky a little bit - I just started to relax and kind of swing and not think about it too much out there. I'm obviously just really happy to get through this match today." Williams fell behind again in the second set after being broken in the fifth game but the 17-time grand slam singles winner, who has won more than $9 million in prize money in 2013, rallied again to close out the set and the match.
Earlier, eighth seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic dished up a double bagel 6-0 6-0 beating of Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro to also advance to the last eight.

Post-menopausal women who walk for an hour a day can cut their chance of breast cancer significantly, a study has suggested.
The report, which followed 73,000 women for 17 years, found walking for at least seven hours a week lowered the risk of the disease. The American Cancer Society team said this was the first time reduced risk was specifically linked to walking.
UK experts said it was more evidence that lifestyle influenced cancer risk. A recent poll for the charity Ramblers found a quarter of adults walk for no more than an hour a week - but being active is known to reduce the risk of a number of cancers.
Recreational activityThis study, published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention followed 73,615 women out of 97,785 aged 50-74 who had been recruited by the American Cancer Society between 1992 and 1993 so it could monitor the incidence of cancer in the group.
They were asked to complete questionnaires on their health and on how much time they were active and participating in activities such as walking, swimming and aerobics and how much time they spent sitting watching television or reading. They completed the same questionnaires at two-year intervals between 1997 and 2009. Of the women, 47% said walking was their only recreational activity.
Those who walked for at least seven hours per week had a 14% lower risk of breast cancer compared to those who walked three or fewer hours per week. Dr Alpa Patel, a senior epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta Georgia, who led the study, said:
"Given that more than 60% of women report some daily walking, promoting walking as a healthy leisure-time activity could be an effective strategy for increasing physical activity amongst post-menopausal women. "We were pleased to find that without any other recreational activity, just walking one hour a day was associated with a lower risk of breast cancer in these women.
"More strenuous and longer activities lowered the risk even more." Baroness Delyth Morgan, chief executive of Breast Cancer Campaign, said: "This study adds further evidence that our lifestyle choices can play a part in influencing the risk of breast cancer and even small changes incorporated into our normal day-to-day activity can make a difference. She added:
"We know that the best weapon to overcoming breast cancer is the ability to stop it occurring in the first place. "The challenge now is how we turn these findings into action and identify other sustainable lifestyle changes that will help us prevent breast cancer."

Arson-arrests-as-Myanmar-leader-visits-restive-area/
(AFP) - Myanmar's president on Thursday met communities in an area convulsed by deadly anti-Muslim violence, after mobs torched property and police fired warning shots to try to restore order.
Six people have been arrested after several days of tensions spilled into bloodshed on Tuesday in the western state of Rakhine, with the death toll now standing at six -- all Muslims, police said.
Thein Sein met local residents and hoteliers in the flashpoint town of Thandwe but did not venture into outlying villages, before returning to the capital Naypyidaw.
The Myanmar leader was on his first visit to Rakhine since a wave of religious violence erupted there last year, leaving dozens dead and tens of thousands homeless. Unrest flared again on Wednesday evening despite the nearby presence of the president, a Rakhine police official told AFP on condition of anonymity. "The police opened fire to control the situation," the official said, adding that two houses on the outskirts of Thandwe owned by a local Muslim were torched but no one was injured.

The man was allegedly involved in a verbal argument with a Buddhist tuk tuk driver that sparked the initial unrest at the weekend.
His house in Thandwe was burned by a mob and he has since been arrested by local police on unknown charges. Muslim families fled into forests in terror after Tuesday's violence, which saw a mob of some 800 Buddhist thugs set alight dozens of homes in their village on the outskirts of Thandwe.
A 94-year-old woman was knifed to death in the rioting, which happened near the popular tourist destination of Ngapali Beach. Rights groups have previously accused Myanmar's authorities of complicity with rioters in the Buddhist-majority nation -- a claim the government denies.
The international community has expressed growing disquiet at the fresh unrest in strife-racked Rakhine. Both the US and UN expressed serious concern over the latest incidents and urged swift action to quell conflict and bring perpetrators to justice.
What began last year as communal fighting between Rakhine Buddhists and stateless Rohingya Muslims has since spread, with other minority Muslim groups increasingly targeted. Around 250 people have been killed and more than 140,000 left homeless in several outbreaks of Buddhist-Muslim violence around the country since June 2012, mostly in Rakhine.

Miley-Cyrus-in-tit-for-tat-exchange-with-Sinead-OConnor/
Former Disney teen idol turned bad-girl pop star Miley Cyrus hit back Thursday at Sinead O'Connor, rebuffing advice by the Irish singer that she stop prostituting herself for music business bosses.
Cyrus, in the headlines repeatedly since her infamous twerking performance at the MTV Video Music Awards show in August, fired off a couple of tweets to O'Connor evoking mental health problems.
The tit-for-tat episode started with a cover story interview Cyrus gave in the latest issue of Rolling Stone, in which she revealed that her latest video for "Wrecking Ball" was inspired by O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U." In the video, the 20-year-old former "Hannah Montana" star swings on a huge demolition ball -- naked except for chunky boots and a come-hither smile.
In a blog on O'Connor's website, the Irish singer wrote: "I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way 'cool' to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos. "It is in fact the case that you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether its the music business or yourself doing the pimping.

"Nothing but harm will come in the long run, from allowing yourself to be exploited, and it is absolutely NOT in ANY way an empowerment of yourself or any other young women."
In response, Cyrus fired off a couple of tweets Thursday, starting with the Irish greeting, "Top of the mornin to ya." "Before Amanda Bynes .. there was .. ." she said, referring to another troubled former child star, and then posted a screenshot of a series of past O'Connor tweets in which the Irish star referred to her own mental health problems, asking for Twitter followers to recommend a psychiatrist.
Cyrus also tweeted a picture of O'Connor ripping up a photograph of the pope, an infamous on-stage stunt by the singer, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Cyrus, whose new album is due out in October, provoked a national stir at the MTV Music Video Awards as she performed a raunchy duet with pop singer Robin Thicke.
The "Wrecking Ball" video drew 19.3 million views in its first 24 hours online, setting a record for the Vevo.com website.

"Memang nak sangat pilih dia masuk kumpulan kami.

Everton FC have revealed the new club badge design most popular with its supporters, after a previous redesign was criticised.
In September, the club said its motto would be reinstated after its removal for this season led to protests. Fans were given a choice of three new crests they could vote for. Nearly 80% of fans that took part opted for the winning design, which garnered 10,343 votes, while 12% of fans chose the second option and 9% the third.
Unveiling the crest, Everton manager Roberto Martinez said: "I was impressed straightaway when I saw it but there has been a huge majority of fans have chosen this one.
The initial redesign provoked protests from fans. "It captures what we were looking for: to have a modern touch and to be a global badge without taking away all the key icons of the football club.
"Certain icons represent many years of history and that is important. Fans made it clear they wanted to see the tower and our motto and I think it is important 'Nil satis' is back on the badge."
The motto Nil Satis Nisi Optimum, which means "nothing but the best", dates back 75 years but disappeared as part of the redesign. The club apologised in May after 22,000 fans signed an online petition condemning the "awful" 2013-2014 badge.
The winning design, which was voted for via the club's website, will be used from next season.

LAMPEDUSA, Italy: Three hundred people were feared dead Thursday after a boat carrying up to 500 African asylum seekers caught fire and sank off Italian shores in the worst recent refugee disaster in the Mediterranean.
Rescuers and local fishermen were overcome with emotion as they spoke of chaotic early morning scenes in the water, with "a sea of heads" as desperate refugees waved their arms and screamed. There were also stories of survival such as a young Eritrean woman thought dead and laid out with other corpses before medical personnel realized she was still breathing and revived her.
A UN official blamed a repressive policy towards illegal immigrants for the tragedy, while UN chief Ban Ki-moon said he hoped the disaster would be a "spur to action" to protecting migrants' rights, and improving the public perception of immigrants.
Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano initially reported "93 victims, including three children and two pregnant women", but rescue divers later said they had identified at least 40 more bodies in and around the sunken wreck. With only 150 survivors plucked from the water more than 12 hours after the disaster, there were fears that the final toll could rise further to 300 or more people. "Seeing the bodies of the children was a tragedy.
We have run out of coffins," said Pietro Bartolo, a doctor. "In many years of work here, I have never seen anything like this," he said. Lampedusa is one of the main entry points into the European Union for asylum-seekers crossing from north Africa or the eastern Mediterranean. Migreurop, a network of immigration charities, estimates 17,000 migrants have died at sea trying to reach Europe in the past 20 years, crossing on rickety fishing boats or dinghies.
Survivors said they were from Eritrea and Somalia and had left from the Libyan port of Misrata. They told rescuers they set fire to a blanket on the boat to attract the attention of coastguards after their vessel began taking on water and passing fishing boats ignored them.
The fire spread quickly, sowing panic on board, which caused the boat to flip over and sink, as people jumped into the sea to save themselves. Raffaele Colapinto, a local fisherman who was one of the first on the scene, said: "We saw a sea of heads.
We took as many as we could on board." Visibly shaken survivors in thermal blankets - many of them bare-chested - were seen on the dock and being treated at the hospital where personnel said many had swallowed gasoline and sea water.
The bodies were being taken to a hangar at the local airport because there was no more room in the morgue on the remote island, which has a population of around 6,000 people. Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta called the incident "an immense tragedy" and the government declared a national day of mourning on Friday and a minute of silence to be held in all schools.
Alfano called for more assistance from the European Union to deal with the sharp increase in refugee arrivals, calling it "a European tragedy". About 25,000 people have landed on Italian shores so far this year - more than three times the number for the whole of 2012, although the figure for 2011 at the height of the Arab Spring revolts in north Africa was higher at around 50,000.
In the last major disaster in June 2011, between 200 and 270 immigrants fleeing Libya are believed to have died off the coast of Tunisia. Many of the arrivals have been on Lampedusa, and most of them have been Eritreans, Somalis and Syrians.
"We no longer have any space for the living or the dead," local mayor Giusi Nicolini said, explaining the cemetery and the refugee centre were full. Letta "should come here and count the bodies", said the mayor, who often accuses the national government of failing to help the island.
The EU's Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem called on EU countries to do more to take in refugees, which she said would help reduce the number of perilous Mediterranean crossings. Pope Francis, who visited Lampedusa in July to plead for more attention to be paid to the plight of refugees, called the disaster "shameful" and urged action to prevent more deaths.
For Francois Crepeau, the UN's special rapporteur on migrants' rights, the "criminalization of irregular immigration" had played a role in the disaster. "Treating irregular migrants only by repressive measures would create these tragedies," he said, adding that by closing their borders, European countries are only giving more power to human traffickers.
In Washington, State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf extended the "deepest sympathies" of the United States and called on "the international community to work to prevent such catastrophes to these vulnerable migrants".

WASHINGTON: Shots rang out outside the US Capitol building as police intercepted a speeding driver on Thursday, sending lawmakers and tourists scattering for cover and triggering a massive security operation.

Police said the car's driver had attempted to get past a barrier outside the White House, just over a mile away, and she was then pursued across downtown Washington, eventually being cornered by police.

Amateur footage obtained by broadcasters showed a black car boxed in at close range by gun-bearing officers near the Capitol building, but the driver executed a sharp U-turn and sped away in an apparent bid to escape. The car was stopped soon afterwards and a child was said to be inside.

"There was a vehicle in the vicinity of the White House that apparently attempted to pass a barricade," Capitol Police chief Kim Dine said after a briefly instituted security lockdown was lifted. "That vehicle was attempted to be stopped by Secret Service, uniformed division," he told reporters, referring to the federal agency charged with protecting the presidency.

"Shots were potentially fired. They pursued the vehicle. The vehicle came, struck one of our vehicles here," Dine said. "We have no information that this is related to terrorism or is anything other than an isolated incident." Washington police chief Cathy Lanier told reporters that the suspect had been pronounced dead, but refused to discuss her identity or her possible motive while the investigation was continuing.

"The child is approximately a year old, and is in good condition, and in protective custody," Lanier said, adding that officers had fired shots at two locations as they tried to halt the vehicle. "I will say that both at the White House and at the Capitol, the security perimeter worked," she said, adding that a Capitol Police officer and a Secret Service agent had been injured.

"They did exactly what they were supposed to do. They stopped a suspect from breaching the security perimeter in a vehicle at both locations," she said. One witness, 21-year-old student David Loewenberg, said he was in his basement apartment near the Capitol, which houses US lawmakers, when he heard "a succession of seven or eight gun shots" and rushed outside.

"I could make out a black car that had either run up on the side of the curb or crashed," he told AFP. Loewenberg saw a police officer leaving the scene "hugging" a child in his arms. "It was a girl as far as I could tell," he said. "The child was taken away pretty quickly by the police officer." The incident was the second major security breach in the US capital in less than three weeks.

On September 16 a deranged gunman stormed the nearby Navy Yard and killed 12 people. Thursday's scare also came several days into a US government shutdown, shattering the previous focus on Washington's political gridlock. An AFP photographer saw at least one person receiving emergency medical assistance on the north side of the Capitol complex.

Police said one officer was hurt in the crash. Senators told reporters that they had heard up to six shots while police sealed off the building and emergency vehicles converged at the scene. "There was a female involved. There was a high speed chase by the police, involving a female, on Pennsylvania Avenue. There were shots fired," a government official told AFP.

A police car was left badly damaged by what appeared to be a collision on Constitution Avenue, immediately outside the Capitol, and a group of tourists were escorted inside. About half an hour after the incident began, the security lockdown at the Capitol was eased and the doors reopened. There were unconfirmed reports that the shooter was in custody.

Outside the Dirksen office building, which houses senators' offices, staff members not sent home by the shutdown could be seen taking cover behind trees and vehicles. The White House was also briefly placed in lockdown, with Secret Service agents in tactical gear deploying around the building. The security alert was later partially lifted.

Matthew Jacobs, a 26-year-old tourist from Wellington, New Zealand, was on a bicycle near the White House when the incident began. He said he saw "some car try to get through a barrier. Rammed through it, bowled someone over and took off."

(BBC) - Arjen Robben says Bayern Munich found their Champions League win at Manchester City "easy" and expected more from Manuel Pellegrini's side.
Goals from Franck Ribery, Thomas Muller and Robben put Bayern in control at Etihad Stadium as the holders cruised to a 3-1 win. Robben said: "We were so dominant against a big team in Europe. We didn't expect an easy game like that.
"It is a compliment to our team but we expected more from City." Pep Guardiola's side were dominant in Manchester, ending the game with 66% of possession despite having Jerome Boateng sent-off with five minutes remaining after Alvaro Negredo had scored a consolation goal for the home side.
Robben netted for a fifth consecutive Champions League game to wrap up the win on the hour mark and the former Chelsea man was surprised at how little City offered going forward. He said: "The first 70 minutes we played some terrific football. "We didn't give them any space, we pressed them right up to the goalkeeper and they just kicked it away.
Sometimes they gave us too much space and we use space well. "City weren't as organised defensively as we had expected but there were some attacks of ours that simply were fantastically executed. "When things go your way like that, it's a lot of fun out on the pitch, especially against a quality team like City."
England goalkeeper Joe Hart was beaten at his near post by Robben's goal, and could have done better with Ribery's opener, but City boss Pellegrini chose to blame the whole team for a poor display. "I will talk about the team, not individuals," Pellegrini said.
"We played really bad, it's not the team we've seen every week in the Premier League and I think that was the worst thing. "We didn't have possession and we didn't do enough to have more. "The difference between City and Bayern Munich may not be what we saw here. There are a lot of reasons why this happened and it's important for me to find solutions to that."

PRESIDENT Barack Obama is trying to keep his foreign policy pivot from becoming a revolving door. Civil war in Syria, a military coup in Egypt and hints of a rapprochement with Iran are diverting the president’s attention from Asia, where he sees the future, to the Middle East, where he risks being consumed by the past.
The government shutdown dominating Washington politics is further imperiling the president’s signature overseas initiative. Obama yesterday curtailed a trip planned for Asia next week because of the political impasse at home.
“What’s happening in Syria, Iran and the like take up an enormous amount of oxygen,” said Kurt Campbell, an architect of Obama’s Asia policy before leaving the State Department this year. “There are deeply consequential things playing out there right now that demand a high degree of American engagement. At the same time, there are also pressures domestically.”
Those twin forces put at risk a presidential policy designed to enhance U.S. standing in a region adjusting to China’s continued economic and military emergence. Asia will witness almost half of global economic growth outside the U.S. in the next five years, according to the White House. And ripples from the rise of an increasingly assertive China are unsettling U.S. allies from Japan to the Philippines.

More Obstacles

Middle Eastern tumult isn’t the only threat to Obama’s Asia focus. As he prepares to depart on Oct. 5 for an Asian summit, the prospect of almost $1 trillion in Pentagon spending cuts over the next decade shadows his plans to raise the U.S. military profile in the region. Demands from 60 senators for action on “foreign currency manipulation” also complicate a proposed 12-nation trade zone linking some 40 percent of the world economy.
The distractions have sparked doubts about whether the so-called pivot to Asia is all talk and little action. After Obama devoted almost his entire Sept. 24 United Nations address to Iran’s nuclear program and the prospects for Arab-Israeli peace, those concerns deepened. “Is the pivot to Asia in the second-term Obama administration sustainable with all the attention to the Middle East?”
Indonesian Ambassador to the U.S. Dino Djalal asked at a Sept. 25 conference in Washington. “Our relations are still below our potential.”

 ‘A Priority’

Administration officials say the U.S. can focus on more than one region. Secretary of State John Kerry said Sept. 27 the Asian rebalancing is “a priority,” adding, “the entire administration is committed to this initiative.” The Pentagon has vowed to protect the planned redeployment of naval and air forces to Asian missions, even as it tightens its belt elsewhere.
Amid speculation that the president ultimately will cancel what’s left of his Asian trip, Jay Carney, the White House press secretary, said today that Obama still hoped to attend planned summits in Indonesia and Brunei. “These are the kinds of meetings where representation by the United States at the highest level achieves good things for us in terms of our national security and in terms of our role in the global economy,” he told reporters.

 Clinton’s Term

The diplomatic shift dates to November 2011 when then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wrote in Foreign Policy magazine that, after a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. stood at “a pivot point” and must devote a “substantially increased investment” to Asia.
It was the rare Obama initiative that enjoyed Republican acceptance. House Armed Services Committee Chairman Howard “Buck” McKeon, a California Republican, said in July, “I don’t think there’s any disagreement on the goodness of rebalancing to Asia.”
The economic case is no secret. While the U.S. was preoccupied with the Mideast, Asia -- led by China -- has flowered. Since the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, Asian equities have outperformed stocks in the U.S. and Europe.
The MSCI Asia APEX 50 index has risen more than 200 percent since then, double the Standard & Poor’s 500 index gain and more than six times the increase in the Euro Stoxx 50 index. The MSCI Asia index is up 1 percent this year.

 ‘Juggling Act’

Making a success of the policy will also require the U.S. to get its European allies to bear more of the defense burden, better focus its efforts in the Persian Gulf and invest at home to remain competitive with China, said Sean Kay, director of the international studies program at Ohio Wesleyan University and a former State Department adviser.
“The pivot is the right strategy, but it’s going to need all these other elements to be in place,” he said. “It’s a real serious juggling act.” Early commentary interpreted the pivot as mainly a military response to China’s rise, including a near-doubling of Chinese economic output from 2005 to 2012. U.S.
officials then began emphasizing the economic and diplomatic aspects of the shift and dropped the term “pivot” in favor of “rebalancing” to avoid suggestions that the Middle East would be ignored. “We’re working to strengthen every single part of our relationship, including our economic links directly between our citizens,”
Kerry said at a Sept. 27 meeting of foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Trade Accord

Where once the notion of rotating 2,000 U.S. Marines through the Australian port of Darwin drew center stage, now U.S. officials emphasize the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
Talks began in March 2010 with the U.S. and six other countries: Australia, Brunei, Chile, New Zealand, Peru and Singapore. Since then, the process has broadened to include Japan, Mexico, Canada, Vietnam and Malaysia.
“TPP is really the center of the pivot, not just the economic part,” said Matthew Goodman, former director for international economics on Obama’s National Security Council staff. “In terms of something that’s new, something that has the potential to really lock us in to that region, there’s really nothing more important.” The State Department expects 1 billion additional middle-class consumers in Asia over the next 20 years.
Many U.S. corporations already have seen their Asian businesses boom, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Apple Inc. (AAPL) last year tripled to more than 21 percent the share of its $156.5 billion revenue that it got from Asia. McDonald’s Corp.
(MCD) drew more than 23 percent of its $28 billion in revenue from the Asia-Pacific region, up from 16 percent five years earlier. Johnson & Johnson got almost 20 percent of its $70 billion from the region, up from 14 percent. And 3M Co.’s Asia business accounted for more than 30 percent of its $30 billion in revenue.

 U.S. Exports

Yet U.S. exports to the 14-nation Pacific Rim region, which includes China, accounted for a smaller share of total shipments in 2012 than a decade earlier, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The U.S. last year sent 24.5 percent of its $1.54 trillion in exports to the region compared with 25.8 percent of $693 billion in 2002. An eventual deal would be welcomed by companies such as Procter & Gamble, JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) and Citigroup Inc., which are seeking improved protection for intellectual property.
Companies such as New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. object to lowering U.S. tariffs on imported footwear, saying they fear “potentially catastrophic effects on the domestic footwear industry,” according to spokesman Matt LeBretton.
A flood of low-priced Vietnamese imports could cost the jobs of many of the company’s 1,350 American shoemakers, he said.

 ‘Currency Manipulation’

Negotiators hope to make further progress on the margins of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in Bali, which Obama is scheduled to attend next week, along with Brunei.
U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman says the aim is to wrap up a deal by year’s end. One obstacle arose on Sept. 24 when 60 senators wrote the administration demanding that it target “foreign currency manipulation.” In June, 230 House members issued a similar call, meaning majorities of both bodies have urged such a move.
Congressional ire over foreign currency values typically centers on the Chinese yuan. China isn’t part of the TPP talks, so the focus is on U.S. ally Japan. The lawmakers’ letters come amid a year-long decline in the value of the Japanese yen, which is down about 20 percent over that period.
That makes Japanese exports more attractive to U.S. customers, raising the ire of U.S. automakers. Still, Obama aims to demonstrate the U.S. emphasis on Asia by traveling to Indonesia and Brunei. Campbell, who left the State Department in February, said the diplomatic shift will outlast the impact of both events in the Middle East and budget battles at home.
“The fundamental focus of strategic engagement is shifting to Asia, but that will not happen overnight,” he said. “I’ve been to enough meetings with the president to know that’s his determination and intention.”

PETALING JAYA: Tax defaulters will be barred from leaving the country starting this month, until their arrears are fully paid.
The Inland Revenue Board said in a statement on Wednesday, that the stoppage order is being invoked under Section 104 of the Income Tax Act 1967 and Section 22 of the Real Property Gains Tax Act 1976. However, defaulters will only be barred after they resist multiple attempts of collection by the board.
The board said it had to take these "drastic measures to ensure that no one is excluded from carrying out their responsibility to meet their tax obligation", adding that instalment payment schemes are also available to help defaulters pay up. It advised taxpayers to take heed of any notice of outstanding tax.

PARIS — Marc Jacobs, the star designer who turned Louis Vuitton from a staid luggage-maker into a global fashion brand, is leaving to focus on his own eponymous label, a source close to the French company’s parent LVMH said on Wednesday.
The move follows a series of leadership changes at Louis Vuitton, LVMH’s cash cow and biggest profit- and revenue- contributor, aimed at helping the brand regain some of its lost prestige after a sustained decline in sales over the past year. “Marc Jacobs is leaving Vuitton and will focus on his own brand,” the source said on condition of anonymity.
LVMH and Marc Jacobs declined to comment. Jacobs’ departure comes a month after LVMH founder and chief executive Bernard Arnault appointed his daughter Delphine as deputy head of Louis Vuitton and replaced last year longstanding chief Yves Carcelle with group veteran Michael Burke. Louis Vuitton, which built its name and profitability on its LV-embossed canvas bags, has been suffering from cooling demand in Asia and consumers’ growing preference for no-logo products.
Over the past year, the brand has put brakes on its expansion, contributing to its sales growth halving to around 5 percent and last month, it hired accessories designer Darren Spaziani, ex-Proenza Schouler, to beef up its high-end offering of leather bags. Nicolas Ghesquiere, a darling of fashion editors, who left Balenciaga last year after having successfully revamped the Kering fashion brand, is seen as a frontrunner to replace Jacobs.
“It would be a positive sign if Ghesquiere joined Louis Vuitton as he is one of the most coveted designers today and he would give a creative jolt to the brand,” said David Da Maia, analyst at brokerage Aurel BGC in Paris. Arnault has been regularly changing the creative and management teams of his fashion brands to refresh the style and drive expansion.
LVMH’s Celine has been going from strength to strength since award-winning designer Phoebe Philo took its creative helm in 2008 while Riccardo Tisci has brought new vitality to Givenchy since his appointment in 2005. Jacobs, whose theatrical fashion shows contributed to heightening the brand’s profile, introduced collaborations with artists such as Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami and Stephen Sprouse and recently rapper Kanye West to help make the brand more relevant to fashion followers.

 Swan Song

Marc Jacobs on Wednesday presented his last collection for Louis Vuitton, an all-black swan song that incorporated elements from his past shows such as the train station he famously reconstituted and the slow-turning white carousel carrying models, including Kate Moss, two years ago.
Today, the Marc Jacobs brand and particularly its more accessible line Marc by Marc Jacobs, are among the most profitable fashion subsidiaries within LVMH, enjoying strong demand in the United States and Japan. Marc Jacobs also launched a cosmetics products line in August in the United States, with exclusive distribution handled by Sephora, LVMH’s beauty products retail chain.
Media reports said the designer aimed to float his business – which is estimated to generate sales of around 500 million euros – on the New York Stock Exchange within a few years. Some industry observers suggest Marc Jacobs has been emboldened by the success of Michael Kors, the U.S. brand whose shares and sales have been enjoying stellar growth since the initial public offering late last year.
At the age of 24, Jacobs was the youngest designer to receive the New Fashion Talent award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. After graduating from the Parsons New School of Design, Jacobs worked for Perry Ellis after the designer passed away and shortly thereafter created his own label in 1984 with partner Robert Duffy. He became Louis Vuitton’s artistic director in 1997.
When Dior sacked John Galliano two years ago after a video showed him making antisemitic comments in a Paris bar, Jacobs was one of the leading contenders to replace him but according to reports, talks fell through over terms. In the end, Dior took more than a year to appoint Raf Simons as its new designer.

Veronica Campbell-Browne
KINGSTON: Jamaica's twice 200 metres Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown has escaped with a public warning by the Jamaica Athletics Administration Association for her use of a banned substance. Campbell-Brown was provisionally suspended in June after she failed a test for a banned diuretic at an athletics meeting in May and faced a three-member disciplinary panel last month.
The JAAA announced their decision on Wednesday. "The disciplinary committee has issued a ruling that Veronica Campbell-Brown has committed an anti-doping violation, contrary to IAAF Rule 32.2a," the organisation said in a statement. "They have recommended that a reprimand without any period of ineligibility would be appropriate."
Campbell-Brown had tested positive for the banned diuretic hydrochlorothiazide, which is on the World Anti-Doping Agency's banned list as a masking agent. Sources close to Jamaican athletics told Reuters at the time the banned drug was contained in a cream that Campbell-Brown was using to treat a leg injury and which she had declared on her doping control form.

(CNN)- Swarms of aggressive hornets, in their fall mating season, are inflicting a deadly toll in a central Chinese province. Hornets have killed 42 people and injured 1,675 people in three cities in Shaanxi province since July, according to the local government.
Thirty-seven patients remain in critical or serious condition. Over the summer and early fall, hornets have invaded schools full of children and descended upon unsuspecting farm workers in China. One of them is Mu Conghui, a woman who was attacked in Ankang City while looking after her millet crop. "The hornets were horrifying," she told Xinhua, the Chinese state-run news agency.
"They hit right at my head and covered my legs. All of a sudden I was stung and I couldn't move. "Even now, my legs are covered with sting holes." Killer hornets sting nearly 600 people Two months, 13 dialysis treatments and 200 stitches later, Mu still remains hospitalized and unable to move her legs. The influx of venom to the human body can cause allergic reactions and multiple organ failure leading to death. Patients like Mu have been receiving dialysis to remove the toxins from her body.
In photos, patients bore deep dark craters scattered across their limbs, the size of bullet wounds. Government authorities say these attacks are from a particularly venomous species, the world's largest hornet, known as the Asian giant hornet or vespa mandarinia. The giant hornet extends about 3.5 to 3.9 centimeters in length, roughly the size of a human thumb.
It has an orange head with a black tooth used for burrowing, according to an animal database at the University of Michigan. Dr. Wang Xue, director of the intensive care unit at First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University and an expert of the provincial hornet sting treatment guidance unit, warned in a Shaanxi government release that hornets tend to be aggressive and more active during September and October -- their breeding season.
The hornets do not go into hibernation until December, according to local government authorities. Local authorities have deployed thousands of police officers and locals to destroy the hives. So far, about 710 hives have been removed and at least 7 million yuan (about $1.1 million U.S.) sent to areas affected by hornets, according to a government press release. The spate of attacks could be caused by the unusually dry weather in the area, authorities say.
The arid environment makes it easier for hornets to breed. Urbanization could also be a contributing factor, as humans move into hornets' habitats. Some experts cited in Xinhua stated additional factors such as increased vegetation and a decrease in the hornets' enemies, such as spiders and birds because of ecological changes. Humans can inadvertently irritate the hornet hives, as most are tucked away in secluded places, such as tree hollows or even underground.
The provincial government has warned residents to wear long sleeves when outdoors, and not to attempt driving away the swarms or removing their hives. Vespa mandarinia are known as formidable, carnivorous killers, found in eastern and southeastern Asia, especially in Japan. About 30 to 50 deaths are reported each year in Japan from such attacks, according to Japanese studies.
Most of the deaths are due to allergies to the venom, said Shunichi Makino, director general of the Hokkaido Research Center for Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute. "It's very difficult to prevent the attacks because hornet nests are usually in hidden sites," he said. Makino, who specializes in entomology, warned that the sting from an Asian giant hornet was severe compared with those of other insects.
"The venom of an Asian giant hornet is very special compared with other hornets or yellow jackets," he said. "The neurotoxin -- especially to mammals including humans -- it's a special brand of venom." The giant hornets are also destructive to western honey bees. Research in Japan suggests tens of thousands of honey bee hives are damaged by the giant hornets each year.
The species feed their young with the larvae of other insects and use their mandibles to sever the limbs and heads of their prey. The hornet's venom sting is a neurotoxin so powerful that it dissolves human tissue, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The giant hornets are attracted to human sweat, alcohol and sweet flavors and smells.
They are especially sensitive to when animals or people run, according to Xinhua. One victim told local media earlier this month that "the more you run, the more they want to chase you." Some victims described being chased about 200 meters (656 feet) by a swarm. Every breeding season, the giant hornets produce an average of 10,000 offspring. They feast on other insects such as wasps and bees, launching coordinated attacks on the hives of their prey.
