BRITAIN's Amir Khan will be stepping into the ring with unbeaten Floyd Mayweather in the richest fight ever to involve a boxer from these shores.
The Bolton lad, an Olympic silver medallist will trade blows with the world's greatest pound-for-pound fighter in Las Vegas on May 3, 2014. The fight is expected to fetch $200million, with Khan's purse believed to be around $6million - although with pay-TV sales on both sides of the Pond it could more than double. An official announcement will be made in the next few days.
It is understood that Khan has already pulled out of his bout with world welterweight champion Devon Alexander, which has been scheduled for December 7 in New York. Khan, 26, is being given his opportunity thanks to a belief in the US that his speed will present a unique test to Mayweather, 36. Stephen Espinosa, head of sports for the Showtime cable TV network which bankrolls both fighters, told Mail Online: "Floyd has seen off the tough, heavy punchers.
"It remains to be seen what he will do against extreme speed and I like the Khan fight very much." Khan had been in California to prepare for his bout with Alexander and it is thought he will remain there with his new trainer Virgil Hunter for the next seven months. Khan's last fight was in April, when he climbed off the canvas to beat Julio Diaz on points.
Meanwhile, Mayweather was last in action in September, seeing off previously unbeaten Mexican Saul Alvarez with a dominant display in Las Vegas.
