KOTA KINABALU: An elderly fisherman was shot dead after he refused to hand over his boat’s fuel to three armed men during a robbery at sea off the east coast Tawau district.
Wilson Ortis, 68, died of a bullet wound in the face during the 5pm incident in waters off Inderasabah on Saturday. Tawau district police deputy chief Supt Keong Ho Eng said on Sunday that Wilson had gone out to sea earlier.
The two men were pulling in their nets when they were approached by the three men in another vessel. ‘’They demanded fuel but the Ortis refused and one of the men pulled out a pistol and shot him point blank, causing him to collapse inside the boat,” Keong said.
Two of the armed men then removed the outboard engine in Ortis’s boat as well as its fuel tank while the third men held down his friend. After the three men made their getaway, Ortis’s friend managed to call for help from other fishermen who towed the boat back to Tawau.
Keong said Malaysian security personnel had intensified their patrols in the area.
