Two Men Claim Trial To Armed Robbery Of Dr Delaila

PETALING JAYA: Two oddjob workers have claimed trial before a Session Court here to the armed robbery of gynaecologist Dr Delaila Ahmad. P. Sharves, 22, and S. Kanthavellu, 20, were charged with using a parang to rob the doctor of her handbag which contained documents and cash amounting to RM18,000, at Jalan SS19/6, Subang Jaya at 1.20am on July 7. The charge under Section 395 and 397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery carries a 20 year jail term and canning, upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Dalirah Din urged bail to be set at RM15,000 for each accused, with the additional condition that they report in to a police station monthly and keep away from the victim and her family. She confirmed that though the accused were not personally acquainted with the doctor, they were known to loiter in the area near her clinic. Their counsel S. Siva Ganesh pleaded for lower bail, saying his clients' family were not well to do and couldn't afford to pay RM30,000. He added that his clients had surrendered themselves to the police, while being accompanied by Sharves' father. "Kanthavellu also has a heart condition, received surgery when he was 13, and recently needing to be hospitalised at the IJN (National Heart Institute). Thus he needs to be on bail, should his condition worsen again," said Siva Ganesh. Judge Rozina Ayob fixed bail at RM8,000 each and allowed both conditions requested by the prosecution. She set Aug 29 for next mention to hand over additional documents. The duo were hauled to a second Sessions Court and slapped with a second charge of causing grievous injury to Dr Delaila by severing fingers on her left hand (jari kiri) at the same time and place. The claimed trial to the second charge, under Section 326 of the Penal Code which is punishable by up to 20 years prison, a fine and whipping, if convicted. DPP Dhiya Syazwani Izyan Mohd Akhir requested that the case be heard together with the first charge. Judge Yasmin Abdul Razak allowed the case to be heard together. She fixed bail at RM8,000 for each, as set Aug 29 for next mention. It was reported that Dr Delaila was robbed in front of her clinic in SS19 in the wee hours of the morning on July 16 by two suspects. The suspects severed her thumb and little finger but she has reportedly went for surgery in Sime Darby Medical Centre.
