TANGKAK: The 28-year-old woman, who was shot dead by her policeman husband before he turned the gun on her father and himself, “was always afraid of him,” said her mother.
 Rogayah Halim, 62, said Norakma Ab Kadir had never told her whether she and L/Kpl Fadzli Omar, 29, were facing any marital or financial problems. “But she did tell me that she was afraid of her husband. That was about a year ago,” said Rogayah.
 “She also described her husband as being demanding and that she always had to listen to him,” she said, adding that her son-in-law had been a policeman for six years. Fadzli, she added, never really talked much during family gatherings, often keeping to himself in the bedroom.
 On Saturday, Fadzli, an officer posted at the Felda Chempelak police station in Segamat, shot his wife at their home in the police quarters at about 6pm before taking their two-year-old son for a 57km drive to her family home in Jalan Ja’amat here.
 The policeman then confronted his father-in-law Ab Kadir Md Arif, 66, before shooting him in the head and turning the .38 pistol on himself. Recalling Saturday’s tragedy, Rogayah said she was on her way home from town when she received a phone call from her eldest daughter that Fadzli was at their home with a gun.
 “I reached around 7.05pm, and before I could even set foot in the house, I heard two shots and screams,” she said yesterday. “When I ran into the house, I saw my husband and my son-in-law sprawled in a pool of blood in the living room.”
 Rogayah said before firing the shots, Fadzli told her two children, who were also in the house, to get out and wait with his son on the front porch. Her son, Ezam Abdul Kadir, 34, said Fadzli had told him during Hari Raya last month that he was “going to shoot someone” while pointing to the revolver at his hip.
 “I thought he was going to shoot some criminals. I never thought he would actually do such a thing,” he told reporters outside the Ledang District Hospital mortuary. Ledang OCPD Supt Harun Idris said Fadzli had no record of mental illness, adding that he did not have any disciplinary problems either.
 The shooting, he said, occurred in a matter of minutes between 7pm and 7.15pm. “He arrived at his in-laws’ house in his own vehicle. He left his young son outside as the incident took place inside the home,” Supt Harun said, adding that the motive for the murders was still being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
 Police, he said, had yet to determine whether Fadzli had shot dead his wife in front of their son, adding that while the policeman died on the spot, Ab Kadir was pronounced dead at Hospital Tangkak.
 The funeral for Ab Kadir and Norakma was held at the Bukit Kontang muslim burial grounds at about 5pm yesterday while Fadzli’s remains would be taken to his hometown in Segamat for burial.
