Mum used cancer drugs to poison daughter. A young mother has admitted she poisoned her daughter with cancer drugs but why she did remains a mystery.
The 22-year-old Gold Coast mother pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm during a brief hearing in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday. Wearing a T-shirt, leggings and thongs, she sat in the prisoner's dock, at one time smiling at two supporters in the public gallery.
Police say the woman fed her four-year-old chemotherapy drugs bought over the internet over 10 months between July 2012 and April 2013. The girl became seriously ill and was hospitalised. Before she was arrested in April the mother chronicled her sick girl's fight for life on a Facebook page that had more than 8000 supporters.
Regular updates and photos of the girl in hospital drew sympathy from the online supporters. She even requested donations for medical expenses. "I have come to realise that my life and my childrens (sic) life was never ment (sic) to be easy," she posted before her arrest in April.
"Someone, somewhere is testing us so greatly. "My faith is somewhat shaken but I know after shattering into a million pieces, we as a family will pick ourselves up and try to fit these broken pieces back together." But the support turned to anger when the woman was arrested and the truth emerged. The girl's grandfather then took to the page asking for calm.
"Can I ask you save the hate and turn all your focus to positive prayerful thoughts for our gorgeous baby, number one priority is to get her well," he wrote. The woman has remained in custody since April. She will be sentenced in the District Court at a date to be fixed.
