JAKARTA: A Malaysian national is facing a possible jail sentence for allegedly insulting the Indonesian flag. According to Indonesian police spokesman Agus Rianto, the man, a general manager of a plantation company, was alleged to have made crude joke on the Indonesian flag.
On August 16, the eve of Indonesia’s 68th National Day, the man was reported to have said the flag could be replaced with his red underwear if one could not be found. He was reported to have made the insulting remark after his employee could not find an Indonesian flag to be hoisted to mark the country’s independence day.
“Maybe he was joking or maybe he was angry with the employee for failing to find the flag. The next day, a group of local residents gathered outside the company to demand for an apology,” said Agus. Following public protests, the man was arrested in Dumai on August 21.
“He will be charged with the alleged offence,” Agus said, adding that if convicted, the general manager could be sentenced to five years’n jail or fined 500 million rupiahs (RM148,000).
