KUALA LUMPUR: A ‘highly stressed’ taxi driver has been uncovered as the culprit, who hurled bricks at cars from pedestrian bridges in Cheras.
The 43-year-old man, who was detained by police on Monday, admitted he was ‘relieving stress’ in randomly throwing bricks at motorists near Taman Connaught since early this month. Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Mohan Singh said police believe the man was responsible for at least two incidents.
“The man claimed the brick throwing was a stress reliever. “We do not believe he did so in order to gain customers for his taxi,” he said adding that, the arrest was possible following a tip off from the public. Speaking to a press conference on Tuesday, ACP Mohan said the police would let the Deputy public prosecutor decide whether the man was mentally fit to be prosecuted.
It was previously reported a police task force is investigating the incidents where stones have been hurled at cars from pedestrian bridges in Cheras. Two police reports have been lodged this month on the incidents. The third and latest case was featured on the Malaysian Crime Awareness Campaign’s Facebook page on Friday.
Ivy Leong, who shared her experience with the page’s administrator, said she and her family were heading towards Petaling Jaya on the East-West Link Highway near Taman Connaught in Cheras at 4pm that day. “It happened right below the McDonald’s bridge at Taman Connaught.
“In a split second, the stone flew into my car,” she said, adding that she and her family suffered cuts from the broken windscreen. A picture attached to the post showed Leong holding a chunk of concrete the size of a fist.
There are three pedestrian bridges across the highway dividing Taman Connaught. The bridge where the incident took place was the busiest of the three. It is mainly used by college students. While the roadside under the bridge seemed cleared of any debris, some stones were found at the highway’s middle divider below the third bridge located near the Connaught beat station.
